I can't speak for everyone, but I can for myself. My thought is that S-E abandoned their fanbase from way back when, and have sold out to the mainstream when it comes to the FF franchise. I want to see a game that puts focus back on the story, gameplay, and challenge, rather than graphics. Some of the later ones have had okay stories, but they all pale in comparison to 6. (Or, for that matter, even 4.) You don't need cutting-edge graphics; Dragon Quest proves that point for Japan. What they really need to do is remarket the genre in the west, showing the deep gameplay and plot, then you can get a more unified fanbase who will happily buy your games, rather than having to get some new fans with each game as you continue to alienate others. Yes, this plan will cause a large reset, but I really think that even with "just good" graphics, they can keep many of the current fans, and bring back some of the old ones. They can have me back too, once they start to do what made the older ones good again.

How did they sell out to the mainstream when FFXII was the most niche title in the franchise, with the most in depth battle system, and which totally turned the main-stream gamers off from the game?

Hell, the one before that was a MMO.

If anything, I think they are turning away from their mainsteam fans, and catering to the niche' who prefer innovation and in the case of XII, inpenatrable depth in their games, rather than remaking Final Fantasy VI yet again can calling it something new?

I guess if "turning away from your hardcore fans" means not making games that only appeal to the mainstream, and making each entry in the franchise, completely different from any other, then that is exactly the reason I love the series....

I wish more series' had the balls to change it up with each entry. We wouldn't have this stagnant sequel fest we see every christmas, full of boring, overhyped, and non-innovative games that are exactly the same as their predecessors, but with better graphics.

I never said innovation itself was bad. I just want the things there to back it up. FF12, at its core, was not a bad game. However, I do disagree with swapping characters out at will, especially during a fight, I hated the gambit system and thought it was too limiting, and the license grid was annoying, and in the end just made the character abilities horribly generic. If the gameplay itself were better, I probably would have it up with the SNES games for quality. Unfortunately, it's a risk that one takes with innovation. Some things work out to me. (Learning abilities/spells from equipment in FF9, for instance.) Other things are, well, a dud. (Just as long as the draw system NEVER comes back.)

Everyone has their own opinion about XII, but I'll say this. The battle system is NOT limiting, lol. It took me 2 playthroughs and over 160 hours to realize it, but XII's battle system is limitless....

...it just requires unbelievable dedication.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

I think you got into where my issue is. It takes too much dedication, to the point where for me, it's obsession, not dedication. I'm not a skilled programmer by any means, but I did do some basics for it. I want more than a max of 12 lines. Late in the game, setting up my healing spells the way I would like them would use half the slots! And that's before all the check conditions to attack, use magic, items, etc. I did not like having to unlock the extra lines on the license grid (tying those problems together), and finding (and buying) the words that I want is not a sensical idea to me. Or, there's the fact that not everything I wanted to do was availiable. Say, "If enemy level > player level + 5, ignore." Sure, if I were willing to change it for every different enemy I see, it would work. But then it's a programming game, not an RPG. Just give me back control of my characters, and I'll be happy.

But yes, as you said, people will see it different ways. That level of micromanagement is not something I want to do, whereas others, like yourself, either take things that I see as a different problem, or are willing to do said micromanaging. It doesn't mean that either of us is wrong, as it's just different playstyles. But it's why I personally still can't put 12 in the same league as 4-6.

I want them to go back to the oldschool FF's.

damn it it's over 8 year since I enjoyed a FF game( not counting remakes)

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

you might want to change your sig, you will get told off for that (moderation) not being mean.

On Topic: I agree this will get a score of over 90% but does anyone else feel it's all been downhill since FFX was made??

I've had it for some time now.

No, I don't think it will get over 90%. It might have good scores for graphics/presentation, but gameplay will drag it down.

starcraft: "I and every PS3 fanboy alive are waiting for Versus more than FFXIII.
Me since the games were revealed, the fanboys since E3."

Skeeuk: "playstation 3 is the ultimate in gaming acceleration"

I'm willing to bet it's going to be somewhere around 88-90.
