Forums - Nintendo - Silent Hill: Shattered Memories discussion thread *SPOILERS!*

All I can say is I enjoyed this game much more than I enjoyed Silent Hill 1.

not the highschool girl.  she was the mother.  thats what i took from it.

the whole highschool area... like the phone calls, the photos taking of the girl and principal in the car and others...

Michelle represents Cheryl's mother? I never considered that. What makes you think that?

As to the highschool itself, I'm fairly positive it meant that while she was in high-school she was having an affair with one of her teachers. Two of the three photos are thinly veiled references to that, as is the entire Pigtails line of messages. Speaking of, the Pigtails line was one of the more disturbing messages I got in the game.

It could be true.  Ever watched Paranoia Agent?

I've never even heard of it, to be honest. Is it a movie or TV show?

Ok so apparently I got the love lost ending... which one is supposed to be the "good" ending again?

 That one.

Ummm.... the sesion and harry weren't related, harry was a confused spirit looking for cheryl, cheryl was in terapist sesion in the lighthouse, so harry goes, mets her and the spirit shatters, cybil was real and existed there, but she was the one that discovered that harry was the spirit, lisa died for the pills, and dahlia dead was just an alucination

This fits with some of the stuff, but not everything. For instance, why doesn't Doctor Kaufmann ever see Harry when the man bursts into a private therapy session? Also, Cheryl was never in the lighthouse: Lighthouse was just the name Kaufmann picked for his clinic. The place was just a standard office building, albeit with a searchlight on top.

Well when Michelle and her boyfriend was fighting in the car and Harry was sitting in the back seat looking at all of this... I thought thats how Cheryl might have seen her parents fighting once and a while.

It is an anime series created by Satoshi Kon

I take it it's a rather trippy one, considering this thread!

This is one of the aspects of the game that confused me. Throughout it (specially towards the end), Dahlia is suggested as the mother. She says shes married to Harry, she even calls Cheryl her daughter, but when Harry is in her apartment the woman with blonde hair is her mother. Also, an ending shows Harry and the blonde woman splitting up, with Cheryl taping it all. Then theres the fact that when Dahlia is young, she says she hardly knows Cheryl. So in this imaginary world, Dahlia is Cheryls stepmother.

Ill piggyback what most here are saying that Harry isnt real, and is only in Cheryls imagination. That would make all the other characters imaginary as well.

I wonder if Dahlia is supposed to represent more than that. She's certainly portrayed as the least-likable of all the characters, which reinforces your point that she's supposed to be a stand-in for Cheryl's real mother, but at the last meeting it seems like she's trying to stall and distract Harry as much as possible. Her last text message even asks Harry to turn back, even though the lighthouse is only a short distance away. And I really doubt any boat is so slow that it would take twenty minutes to cross a lake...

Good point, I hadn't thought of that. We know from many of the echo messages that she was listening in to her father's conversations.

Trippy doesn't even begin to descibe Paranoia Agent.  PA is one of the most messed up series made in anime and animation in general.  The latter half in particular will have you very confused with a ton of mind screw towards the end.  This series is a masterpiece in terms of the animation medium and an underappreciated one at that.

Alright, you've convinced me. I'll see if I can track it down.

Many many flaws? Yeah I read your comments on the review and while I understand what you're saying I don't agree at all. I don't mind the linearity but I agree that it's disappointing the normal world is not scary at all and the puzzles are very easy. In my opinion this is a great experience because it's a great Game.

On topic, I thought similar to what SeriousWB said, but I'm confused whether Dahlia is a representation of her mother or Harry's lover....

Anyway, I'd like to know how you get the different endings. Is it by the answers in the therapy or the mementos you collected?

I finished it twice and I haven't gotten all the mementos and got two similar but different endings. In both endings Harry says Cheryl to forget him and then freezes. But in the first one Cherly walks alone out of the clinic, and at the very end Harry appears with two girls in bed (Dahlia and Michelle).

The second time, her mother was waiting for her outside the clinic, and at the very end she was taping her parents splitting up and Harry saying they still love her and wasn't her fault.

So my question is, what do I have to do or not do to get the different endings?

Pretty much everything affects what ending you get: how you answer the therapy questions, what you look at/dial/go during gameplay, etc. Staring at stuff during the more interactive cutscenes also plays a role (and you know what I mean by "stuff" ). Basically, there's some sort of formula going on behind the scenes, and doing/not doing stuff adds points towards earning certain endings.

So what do you guys think about the UFO ending? Is it a joke or just the ultimate ending? It is certainly cooler than the UFO ending in SH1.

Both! I finally got it, and I've got to hand it to Climax. Well done!

When I got it I was blown away. The artstyle itself is pretty shocking and a great homage to the first title and its pop Japanese heritage. I laughed out loud at it. Climax earned a point from me for it.
