Take it from someone who has now played both games: Bayonetta does not even come close to God of War. You're doing the right thing holding out for Kratos. I disagree with the OP so much I don't even know where to begin. I actually have Bayonetta for 360 thing too that's the funny. It's a great game, but nowhere near perfect. It ranks as a good new hack and slash, but to me it's no better than Devil May Cry.

So.....it's nowhere near as good as God of War, what? 1?

You want to give some reasoning behind your opinion. I mean, maybe you should clear your statements up a little. Is it your user preference that makes you favor God of War? Do you imply that the gameplay in God of War is deeper than that of Bayonetta?

Mostly, I find that users like yourself prefer presentation, character, and story, to in depth japanese style combo systems, and that is the main difference between the two different subgenres. Some often mistake this as a quality difference, but it is actually a difference in user preference, as the developers actually focused on different things when creating the two games.

Thank your lucky stars for DMC though, because without it, GoW wouldn't exist in its current form. Ironically, the creator of DMC also created Bayonetta.

In the end, the game has the pedigree, user reviews, and critical reception to mark it down as a must play for action fans, GoW inferiority complexes not withstanding.

There's no way to objectively compare games. So yes, what I'm saying is my opinnion. Much like every single reviewer who has reviewed Bayonetta is stating their opinnion. There is nothing that makes their opinnion more valid than mine. And yes, as good as Bayonetta is, it's not even as good as God of War 1.

@Jesus Kung Fu - GOW has much better production values. I like the gameplay better as well. It was revolutionary for its time and has pretty much re-defined the way a hack n slash should be. Bayonetta feels exactly the same as DMC to be completely honest. While this isn't a bad thing, it's not the same calibre as GOW.

See now thats a better post that I can respond to....

GOW did have some of the best prodction values of its time but thats just it , only in its time.....we are here in the next gen and almost every game 80-100 on metacritics this gen have better production value that both GOW 1 and 2 (and that includes bayonetta).

The gameplay in bayonetta ,as you said ,is the same as DMC while imo that isnt true this alone makes it better than GOW.....GOW has by far the weakest combat system of the big 3 in the hack n slash genre but it made up for that by having far better characters , atmosphere and story which is why it is regarded as the best in the genre.

Bayonetta gameplay is years ahead of anything in GOW....in GOW the "wow" moments only happen in QTE while in bayonetta they can happen at anytime in game....the boss battles dont even compare with each other. The enemy design is also a big plus in bayonetta with each troop enemy having the same creativity put in to them as a full on boss.

I dont know how far you are in the game but really there is a point in the game where it becomes clear tha bayonetta is the best in its genre....

Hmm I'll stick to God of War, I tried the bayonetta demo and I didn't really like it, there was not really anything new, reminded me of a mix of devil may cry and god of war.

Play the game when it comes out .....demos are not indictative of the whole experience and that couldnt be more true for bayonetta.

I disagree. I like the fighting much more in God of War. And I disagree that Bayonetta has better production values. I'm currently playing several games so it might take a while to finish, but when I'm done, I'll revive this thread.

To each his own I guess but the only thing bayonetta has thats bad is its cheesy voice acting.....but that is a given with a japanese game translated to english....and yes Japan has finally done something of significance this gen

I respect your opinion.

That said, you must certainly realize that the fighting in God of War is much more akin to that of the old school hack n slash games, in that it is relatively shallow compared to other games in the genre.

Many people prefer the shallower combat, and you might be one of those, but if you are saying that the gameplay in Bayonetta is shallower than the gameplay in GoW, then you simply haven't played it enough. There is enough gameplay depth in that game to keep even the most hardened Ninja Gaiden fan busy and calculating for months.

Bayonetta is built around the depth and application of its gameplay. Gow of War is built around the experience of a single-player playthrough. That is the primary difference between the two subgenres, and while it isn't a provable fact that GoW's gameplay is relatively shallow compared to say, Ninja Gaiden of DMC, it's about as close as you can get to one. I'd say that the only hack n' slash that I've played that contains a more simplistic fighting system than GoW is Heavenly Sword, and that is a testament to the genre because despite its relatively depth, GoW still has a reasonably deep combat system.

So, my question is, are you refruting that assertion, or instead insisting that depth wasn't in your argument, and instead you were comparing the two gameplay styles in an apples to oranges comparison, and deciding that you, in fact, prefer apples.

Either way, they are both great games, GoW1 and Bayonetta, and at least you admit that much, I'm sure that personal preference between the two games will vary wildly from person to person, so that should be known before accepting anyone's opinions on the subject. After all...different subgenres.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

Well nothing has really topped Ninja Gaiden for me, namely Ninja Gaiden Black on the Xbox. Though I'd assume this will be a fantastic game and really give NG a run for its money. God of War is definitely up there as well. All I know is Platinum has another great game and look forward to seeing more from their studio after Madworld and now Bayonetta.

Anyway, I have mixed feelings about the game. I like the stylish presentation & art style, but the fighting looks too much like God of War. I absolutely detest quick time events, and the rest of the game seems like DMC4 played on "Automatic". Not really my cup of tea, but I could be wrong about that last part. I haven't played it yet.

A few things.. If you hate QTE, never, ever play God of War I or II. Ever. It will make you want to strangle yourself.

Next, trust me when I tell you, this game has FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR more depth than DMC4. It just does.

Also, the fighting doesn't really look like GoW, imho, but if you are drawing parallels, and think this game looks like GoW, then Bayonetta looks much more like DMC, almost exactly like it....DMC came out years before GoW, so in your opinion, GoW's combat looks too much like DMCs. I agree, without the original DMC, GoW wouldn't exist in its current form.

Also, the inventor of DMC, and the overall genre these games are in, also created Bayonetta.

His name is: Hideki Kamiya

He directed and helped create these games:

Eh, I plan on picking Bayonetta up, but think it should be judged on it's own merits, not God of War, Ninja Gaiden, Devil May Cry or anything else. I liked what I played of it, though I'm not so sure it gave me the same satisfaction as other games in it's genre.

Then again, it doesn't have to, as it's different enough in it's own right. But to me, there is no absolute, just because some think it's better than other games, doesn't mean it's true or false. It just proves that it's an opinion, not a fact.

Good post!! :)

To each their own, and imo, I don't understand the comparison to GoW III. If GoWIII was a year away, it wouldn't keep coming up in threads like this, lol.

Anyway, good post. No need to diss one game to promote another, I say.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

I've been hearing this from around. It almost makes me interested in the game. I really hate the genre though, so I'll stay away because I know I'll just be disappointed in the end.

10/10 in LEVEL though... that's pretty amazing.
