Forums - Gaming - Wired FFXII review, not so good.

Final Fantasy 13 sold 1.5million first week in Japan. Looks like the consumers had no problem with change.

Need I say more?

I feel compelled to point out that if gamers buy a game that early on in such large numbers, it's probably due to hype rather than to word of mouth. Look for legs: if the game has them, then you've definitely got a point. If it doesn't, and the game sells worse than previous Final Fantasies...

The big issue im having FFXIII strips you of any freedom, its bad enough JRPG's are liner, but to make it worse No sidequest, LV caps , Xxploration, control over one character? come on Zen its good to be optimistic, but to ignorestuff like that? im not made FFXIII is being different but we have a JRPG tryin to be a action game...or hell a action game tryin to be a JRPG

A. Why is it bad that JRPGs are linear? I think it's great, actually....

B. There are few sidequests and exploration in the first 15 hours of nearly every FF before XII. I'm guessing you hated XII. In fact, for you, XII should be the perfect game. Exploration, sidequests, and leveling right off the bat, no progression required.

C. KoToR had level caps, and nearly every FF had level limitations. They just don't call them caps. Instead, you get much less exp per enemy kill in weaker areas. Also, I'm not sure you actually level in FFXIII.

D. In Tales of Symphonia, and Vesperia, you control 1 character. In FFXII you control 1 character, and set up gambits for secondary characters. Same in KoToR and Dragons Age, and many, many other great RPGs.

E. How the f do you think there are no sidequests or exploration in the game? Those things happen in disc 3 on FFVII. In other FF games, it takes sometimes months to figure out some of the more interesting end game quests and sidemissions. You have no idea how deep this game is.

Your afraid that this game will be a shallow game, and that's the long and the short of it. I doubt it is, and I know for damn sure that even if you've beaten it, you might not know for sure. FFXII and VIII have two of the deepest gameplay systems in JRPGs but you can blindly buttonmash your way through the main campaign and call the game shallow, but you won't be beating those weapons...

If my last response didn't convince you to think for yourself, nothing will, and if you have this little faith in the FF series after all this time, then maybe you should skip it. Put your faith in Wired.

A. its debatable, I Love Xenogears, FFX, Breath of Fire DQ, Rivera the promised land but Hated the Super Linier build B. Sidequest not to big of a Issue, there are hunts which is ok, but hopefully theres more to there C. naming a western game( which FFXIII is trying its hardest to cater too) doesn't make feel anybetter... in regards to previous FF's... FFXII, FFX, FFIX, FF8( definitely), FF7 ext I can powergrinc to hell...it may be get longer with each LV aquired but theres is No Cap except for LV 99 D. FFXII your controlling watever character they make you apparently.... in all those games I can switch to watever character I want to be at ANY given time E. Only sidequest mentioned is hunts, 64 of them which is good wat else?..if FFXIII is built kike FFX likes it veen said there wont be any exploration. as a JRPG junkie I definitely wont be missing out on it..never had a though tto do otherwise, but the removal of the RPG elements is wat gets me disapointed.. im playing FFXIII because be Ive saited for 5 agonizing long years to play this apparently epic RPG I haven't lost anhy faith..... I dont mind leaving tradition out, I dont mind FFXIII being movie so was MGS4...I'll manage through the linearness.....but plz stay a RPG,

stupid, the game gets amazing after chapter 11 according to most reviews online, this isnt a review

Well, no, Kohler never once refers to it as a review, but rather as a preview.

That said, you're not the first person to point out that he hasn't finished the game yet, and that it's supposed to "get better" much later on. I have to ask, though: isn't demanding over 20 hours of playtime before the game becomes "good" asking far too much? It makes me uncertain which of you people are actually defending the title, and which are either stealth trolling, or simply damning the game with faint praise.

Final Fantasy XIII only sold 1.5 million in its first week in Japan. All the main story games that have been released on PS1 and PS2 in Japan sold in excess of 1.5 million copies in its first week. First week sales account for most of the Japanese ltd game sales. Sales trends indicate very top heavy sales for JRPGs in Japan.

If the main problem here is just linearity, like it was in the beginning of FFVII, I expect to be okay

If the main problem is tha it's actually slow for twenty freaking hours

I haven't got that kind of patience for any game. Jesus, I didn't give Persona that kind of time

I pre-emtively loved FFXIII, but now my hype and faith goes down. It isn't just because of this review, but a lot of reviews I been reading, and a lot of which I am seeing. Given I am still going to purchase this game and beat it, but I think my hype and love is going to End of Eternity and Tales of Graces now.

Okay, I admit you're too mercurial to be in the Hell of the FF12 lovers. That's not an insult, it's actually a lucky break on your part
