Forums - Sales - One reason why no FF has been able to surpass or get close to FF VII sales?

Let me start off by saying that I can't back this up with proof, but I severely doubt that FF7 was "the first 3D RPG", as you put it. I doubt it was even in the first 100 3D RPGs.

Either way, I think FF7 got off the ground because it got good advertising and was backed heavily, so it was pretty much the beginning of the series outside of Japan. By this I mean, for a lot of people FF7 was more like "FF1". And as with most series, sequels rarely reach the point of their predecessor. Some of the people who bought FF7 just didn't want to take part in the series anymore. But a lot of people did, which shows why other FFs have had strong sales.

To red bolded:

That's a bit debateable isn't it? I mean:

MGS1 vs MGS2

Uncharted 1 vs 2 (it's close to beating it's sequel in a much shorter time period)

Age of Empires 1 vs 2

CoD2 vs CoD4 (if we go by IW games)

Tomb Raider 1 vs 2

Halo 1 vs 2 vs 3

No, that's why I said rarely instead of never.

Well I thought FF7 was a pretty good game(at the time). It's actually the reason I bought my PS1 as I was (and still am ) a really big fan of the SNES FF games.

It's actually FF8 that made me stop playing FF games, because it was such a terrible, terrible game. I tried to get back into FF by getting FFX (I had a gift certificate, so I paid nothing for it) and I was once again disappointed by it.
I just bought FF13, but not really because I wanted the game. I wanted the nice looking Lightning Edition PS3 and well the game came with it. :-/

starcraft: "I and every PS3 fanboy alive are waiting for Versus more than FFXIII.
Me since the games were revealed, the fanboys since E3."

Skeeuk: "playstation 3 is the ultimate in gaming acceleration"

SONY published it and back then they were advertising geniuses.

4 ≈ One

It was the first time the West got in actual contact with JRPGs. The game was pretty impressive too, making it very mainstream.

One Reason:

SONY.

FFVII was taken under Sony's wing, all regions benefited from the aggressive campaign, and the West also benefited of Sony co-publishing it... They did back then what MS does now with Halo...

After the incredible sales of FF VII, it seems a bit hard to understand that no other FF has been able to put numbers even close to the game.

1st FF VII 9.71 Millions WW and 2nd FFX with 7.95 Millions WW. Almost a difference of 2 Millions. I know that a lot of you have your own theories about this so this is mine. FF VII was the First 3D RPG and probably one of the most hyped game of its generation. The game had so much hype that you will definitely go the store and buy the game. The bigger question is: How many of those owers new to FF actually loved the game.

When FF VII got out I remember having a lot of friends really a lot who bought the game and after playing it they decided not to ever buy a FF game again. So out of those 9.71 Millions copies sold, how many new FF gamers actually became fan of the series and how many decided not to ever buy a FF game again. This is my theorie and now my questions to you guys

1) Do you have friends (or yourself) who played FF VII (FF VII being probably their (your) first or second FF) and hated the series after playing the game?

This could help to see if my theorie is close to be right or completely wrong.

I myself I loved it

Nope, not that I remember if you mean "hated".

BUT, most of my "casual" friends, who bought a PS because EVERYBODY had a PS (my father had a PS...), DID bought FF7 because you HAD TO buy FF7. Like you HAD TO buy Gran Turismo and co.

These friends did like FF7 and some of them even bought FF8. But that's the end of the story. Most of them now own a Wii and don't care at all about PS2 or PS3...

Some of my "semi-gamers" friends (meaning people playing major games only and some big franchises, football and co) did buy FF7 and didn't like JRPG so much. So they stopped.

So I would say FF7 appealed to the whole market, where following ones appealed a little bit more to core.

As a note, I have to say that I am playing FF13 now, and that the aforementioned "semi-gamers" friends noticed it and most of them said "wow, I'd like to try this one. 1st time since FF7 that I'm attracted to a FF...". So I predict FF13 may have overall tremendous sales despite PS3's install base.

Several 3D RPGs predated FFVII in the US (Wild Arms, Shining the Holy Ark, Guardian War, Mystaria, etc).

Really though, I think it came down to the right product, the right promotion and the right timing.  Previously the only real significant efforts to push JRPGs had come from Nintendo, and they'd all basically failed to take off as hoped (Dragon Warrior, Final Fantasy, Earthbound).  Nintendo struck gold with Pokemon a year after FFVII though.

FFXIII is to expand the audience of FF again. Versus is there to satisfy the loyal FF fans.

For the first red bolded part: This is what I mean, FF VII sales were huge but not everyone buying the game became immediately fan of the series. Not all those buyers were waiting for the next FF.

For the second red bolded part: If FF XIII can actually get people whose last FF game was FF VII, then maybe we can see some interesting sales for FF XIII
