Forums - Sony - If avatar is a success it could very well help blu-ray sales thrive

Blu-ray has now been in the market for a few years and the ps3 with it.

Now that avatar has been releasd and it seems to be a successs at the box office one of the things that make this movie so great is the 3-d ( yet a few weeks or months ago(i don't exactly remember when) it was announced that ps3 as well as 360 would support 3d technology and that blu-ray movies was to also become 3d compatible. Watching movies in 3d could be a selling point for blu-ray  and avatar containing that technology would really help it to become the leading format, thus i think that it has a definite link with the console sales given that the ps3 is the only blu-ray player that we know for sure will play 3d movies.

so what is your opnion on all of this?

Let's look at it this way:

This generation is actually the 720p Generation, not the 1080p Gen.

This generation is actally the Blu-ray/HD DVD Generation. not the "3D Video" Gen.

Avatar is allready a success, but it won't affect Blu-ray sales that much really.

Since when did the 360 decide to support 3D??

We are not talking about whether or not the consoles this gen can render games in 1080p but we are talking about them rendering movies and they very well can. And even so movies do not need to be rendered in720p to be 3d.

Out of gaming sony and other important manufacturers have really been pushing 3d TVs recently for 2010/2011 releases and those being compatble with Blu-ray, so we know it is technically possible the question is do you think that with important marketing and the success of Avatar that can succeed ?

Many people purchased their HDTV's for these new consoles/blue-ray recently. Almost all of those tvs would not be able to support 3D anyway. 3D requires 120hz + from source, where most 120/240 tvs take in the exact same 60hz source and internally up it to 120/240.

As of right now, I know some of the later model DLP tvs can and do support from source 120hz and LCDs are on their way to that as well (some have already started). As far as plasmas go, I donno.

Well my tv is only 60hz and i would never buy a 3D movie as i hate things popping out at me.

all i know is i seen avatar in 3d and it was AMAZING

Have you played WipeoutHD?? That's 1080, 60 fps, and gorgeous. Flower is 1080. Stardust HD is 1080. And we are talking native, not upscaled. Killzone2 was almost 1080i, but they took it out at the last minute, probably killzone 3 will be. For me, this is the 1080 gen, sure many games are 720 but 1080 is there also, and 3d is around the corner.

I may be completely wrong with this statement, but are not movies technically recorded at 24p? So if you need double the frames (one for each eye's perspective), then you only need 48p?

I know the electronics industry is about planned obsolescence, but if everything released this year was obsolete next year, I think everyone would have a fit, and it would backfire on the industry.

Well......Avatar in 3D was one of the most epic experiences in a theater I have ever had.

Other than that, I can not intelligently comment on how the tech is evolving and how it can be attained (in an affordable manner) in my living room.

But hopefully soon.
