I may be completely wrong with this statement, but are not movies technically recorded at 24p? So if you need double the frames (one for each eye's perspective), then you only need 48p?
I know the electronics industry is about planned obsolescence, but if everything released this year was obsolete next year, I think everyone would have a fit, and it would backfire on the industry.
