Forums - Gaming Discussion - Gamestop pressuring to buy used?

If I can get a game used, in good condition and complete, I do so. They start out 10% cheaper and I use the discount card for another 10%. I especially like doing that on games I don't know if they are worth having.

Do all of you who are advocating buying new games also buy new books (i.e., college textbooks)?

Just remember that no one is forcing anyone to resell their games to Gamestop. But usually the people doing that have finished their games and are looking for some for some disposal value (and an easier method than trying to make a direct sale). And which is better -- paying $60 for a game and not getting $15 back or paying $60 for a game and getting $0 back?

There are other ways of buying and selling used games than using Gamestop.

The difference between games and books is that books tend to ruin quicker than games, and books sell for a long time whereas a publisher usually has a very small timeframe to make a profit. It's not surprising that people want to support the games industry more, especially at a time when it's bleeding money...

Legally, there's nothing wrong with what Gamestop does. But that doesn't mean people have to like it... They push used games very hard, to the detriment of publishers.

I don't buy used games and never will buy used games its just that i like to buy games at launch and new. like to unwrap it money goes to publishers and developers money goes to store everyone is happy.

Gamestop makes their employees very pushy. Subscription quotas and shit rarely make a pleasant experience for customers. How many times do I have to say "no I do not want a subscription and no I do not want to put any money on a pre-order"?

Oh, that reminds me... EB Games (which I think is the European subsidiary of Gamestop) here is now pushing something like "media warranty", which if I understood correctly is insurance against DVD scratches and things like that...

This struck me as a big scam... isn't it usually the case that stores would replace scratched DVDs for a fee?

I think at least their used game sales had a lifetime warranty on them.  I haven't been to Gamestop in a while though.  But yes, that warranty sounds like a bunch of shit.

I'm gonna avoid the whole new vs used debate because both sides have merit, buy what you want and sleep well at night. What i will say is if the minamum wage slave on the other side of the counter won't take no for an answer and contuines with the hard sell, fuck with him. Fuck. With. Him. HARD. Now to be perfectly clear on this, the speil that the EB/GS guys give is part of their job, they are obligated to do it, so it would be very bad taste abuse them for just doing it once. The problem starts when you have said, " No thanks, not intrested", and it is taken as a challange to get you to say yes, as in the OP's case. When ever this comes up for me, I make it my new mission to make the clerks life a living hell, by holding up lines nitpicking and asking stuipd questions, demading to inspect the disc before compleating the sale, porposly fucking up my debit pin, and just about anything else i can think of at the time. Long and short of it is i understand they are doing thier jobs, i worked retail for enough years to know that being behind the counter is often not enjoyable, but my patince can be strected only so far. How many other places in the world would you tolerate somebody ignoring what you've said and treating you like a child?
