Also, people should consider the relative price of final fantasy XIII. This is a very expensive game in Japan.
It originally launched at ¥ 9,240 which is approximately 108 CAD.
It then dropped to a prive of ¥ 7,387 which is something like 87 CAD.
For comparison most Canadian new PS3 games launch for 59.99-69.99 CAD.
You cannot look at the sales of final fantasy 13 and compare them to the last game in the series. Final Fantasy is not like Halo or CoD. The Japanese are very picky. They also only spend money when it is worth it. There are very few Japanese households with more than 1 current generation console, at least in my experience.
The launch of Final Fantasy X basically jump started the PS2 In Japan.
I have high expectations that Final Fantasy XIII will do the very same for the PS3.
The game gets the console into more owners hands, developers make more games, more games sell, and the cycle keeps going.
Anyone talking about these sales being poor is out of their minds. These sales are _phenomenal_ for a 4million user base. Very similar to Final Fantasy X Indeed. Toss in about 800k for the 360 in NA and about 3million for the PS3 and you have around 6 million sold WW which is exactly what Square Enix need. They may talk about better, but only on rare occasions has a final fantasy title broke 6m.
Going multi-plat will only bring a small amount of new players to the series, however. The content of a final fantasy game is still not popular among western gamers and it never will be. The Japanese style of gaming isn't for everyone. When final fantasy 7 was launched gaming was mostly dominated by core gamers, which lead to high sales. These days you can be world of warcraft has absorbed a very large percentage of those gamers. The XBOX 360 is not necessarily a casual platform, but more a cross over platform. Meaning the majority of its owners will never look at final fantasy 13, just like they never looked at lost odyssey. They know what they love and it's shooting people.
There is absolutely no way final fantasy 13 will come anywhere near the sales of mass effect on the 360, it's going to have a LOT of trouble keeping up with Dragon Age: Origins. These are mostly western gamers who love western RPGs and shooters.
Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with that, they are all fantastic games. It's just not the userbase who enjoys final fantasy.
That being said, the game is loved by most. I left Japan yesterday night for home for the holidays, but things are really exciting. It's so happy to finally see gaming alive in Japan again after all these years. If it wasn't for dragon quest gaming would be virtually dead since FF12.
Another little comparison which might mean something to you or not.
Final Fantasy X 1,906,152 FW @ about ¥4,530 = 95,000,000$ apx. revenue.
Final Fantasy XIII 1,500,000 FW @ about ¥ 7,387 = 130,000,000$ apx. revenue.
Also, look at the FW for Final Fantasy X, only 1.9m yet it ended out with over 3m LTD in japan. Do you know why? It's because the game launched with a small userbase, was considered great and kept selling as more people bought PS2s.
I have expectations that FFXIII will follow the same path. This game will continue to sell until FF15 is launched and will probably keep selling even then. my Final predictions for LTD is about 2.5m in Japan.

most thought it wasn't going to get passed 200k because ioi said it would do 200k Max, and that would be pushing it.
he expected 175k-200k
While he expects wii to do 200-220K
he also said FF XIII would do 1.1-1.2M, but did 1.55m
So who knows

I think Wii hardware numbers will be pretty good too, no less than 180K I say if not over 200K. NSMBWii is what Wii needed. |
200k would be excellent. It really only has to sell ~110k to remain ahead of the PS3 YTD anyways.

Er, FFX launched at 8800 yen. Also, it only sold 2.32m, meaning about 80% 1st week.
Anyway, awesome sales for FFXIII and (especially) PS3 hardware.
I kinda wish the U.S advertised likes this:

17/12/09 [PS3] Final Fantasy XIII (Square Enix) - 1.516.532 / ?
Hardware is well above my expectation, but software is right where I thought it'd be. Great start.
Well it's slightly under my prediction of 1.6 million first week but within margin of error. Let's wait and see what Media Create has to say. I wish Darth was here. Keep on rocking SE.
