I agree; unfortunately, I don't think companies are actually as risk-adverse as they claim (or they wouldn't be pumping tens of millions into "potential" blockbusters). I'm convinced that most developers simply don't want to make 2D games anymore, so they'll come up with whatever excuse they can.


The thing is, those blockbusters aren't terribly high risks. Get some awesome screenshots and a shiny trailer, and the fratcore will eat it up like candy. All you have to do is throw them enough shiny objects.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.

Nope, Mega Man 10 will not create more Mega Man fans. 

I was kinda hoping that with NSMBW  developers would realize that 2D can sell as well, if not better, than 3D.  Plus, being a DLC title will limit the potential user base. 

 

A well made 2D title can still sell on a console if it is made right.  Nintendo has shown this.  Capcom could create a great retail 2D Mega Man game that would have created new fans, but apparently chose not to. 



I think it could do well at retail. Look at how many DS games are SNES quality graphics but sell multiple millions. I'm not saying Mega Man would push millions, but if they could make a game and put it out cheaply, it could do well. If there was an end of aisle display with Mega Man 10 disk inside of a cardboard NES cartridge and it was only like $9.99 -$14.99, that'd be an instant purchase for me and I don't even like Mega Man.

If it was $59.99.... haha.... no.

Actually, I strongly disagree. There are more big-budget flops than hits this generation, and I see that trend becoming exacerbated as time goes on. People are too busy being impressed with the sales of games like Assassin's Creed and Gears of War to notice the massive flops like Bionic Commando, Wolfenstein, and dozens more, but the fact remains that many studios are gambling their future existence on a single blockbuster game...and like all gamblers, they're finding that the odds don't favor them.
