Why do we have to have debates anyways? How about we just discuss what we like and don't like about games (and other topics of the sort), without trying to include "The Xbox Clan" or "The Nintendo Clan?" I think gaming is a great passion. There are plenty of subjects to talk about and you don't need to side for any company. There's not just the console war going on... and like I always say, there's only a war if you want to see a war.

This is kind of close to my feelinig on the matter. Like I said, though: work in progress.

A debate type format like around the horn doesn't mean you need 1 guy from each side arguing. Heck, on their show sometimes they all agree on the same thing, but they each bring a different point. It just means that you have a host asking questions, and people answering. It drives the conversation forward much like an interview 1-on-1, only with 1 host and multiple responders. The host is responsible for planning the topics ahead of time, giving some insite to the situation, and asking others what they think of it. It isn't like I'm suggesting the generic question of "what did you play this week" never be asked, or other open ended general discussion questions.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy
In the past we played games. In the future we watch games. - Forest-Spirit

Ooo... suppose we had revolving topics, maybe depending on the guest speakers we have? One week we could all talk about some big new game or a particular piece of news, the next week we could all make public our predictions for console sales through the next year and have a debate centered around that... that sort of thing.

Good idea Khuutra. Will be interesting to see where this goes from here.

I'm all for this idea. If you do want to make me a part of it, be warned: I tend to drop the f-bomb every few seconds in coversation.

It would probably be more funny than offensive to you lot with my accent, though :P

Well the way I would do my podcasts is there were 3 regulars and every now and then "special guests" for opinions. Setup was very easy. Had a lineup of things to talk about that was distributed before hand, followed the schedule, and everything went smooth. Of course it is easy to get off topic and go overboard on some discussions but I was always very lenient in that respect. Had one podcast that lasted 3 hours haha.

But a few recommendations, is you need a solid host. Host, like any roundtable, is definitely very important. Someone who keeps the discussion flowing, humorous, and doesn't allow discussions to get stuck or biased. I was alwasy very good about that in my podcasts haha which is why I hosted. Second, never have more than 5 people tops. You get more than that and it'll get hectic or very timely. That 3 hour one I had, had almost 7 people in the podcast haha. Finally, have a strict schedule that is followed loosely. Meaning have topics setup with questions, news, and discussions ready to go but make sure the conversation flows naturally rather than forced.

But with podcasts, trust me, the hard part is not in actually doing the podcast. The hard parts are editing and uploading. They are tedious and brutal. Not to mention setup beforehand especially when you have people that span across countries. But I was always able to manage it for the most part. But lag can sometimes be a factor but hey whatever.

I will keep this in mind

And no worries: sometimes I, too, sad "bad words"

Sounds like a great idea; I would definitely listen to it since VGC has a lot of interesting members.

The website I used to work with did weekly podcasts. I only participated once since I had class the day the podcasts were normally recorded, but it was a pretty fun experience. Every weekend, the participants went over what they were going to discuss before doing the podcast on Monday. Some topics we covered:

  • This week in gaming news
  • What games we are playing
  • Upcoming releases
  • Sales discussion (this would be perfect discussion for the VGC podcast)
  • Retrospective (Discuss on whether a big, anticipated game that was released last month or so lived up to the hype. We debated on whether RE5 was a great game or not three weeks after its release.)
  • Random discussion/debate

All of those segments weren't in one podcast: just three or four of them. Make sure you put a time limit on each segment. We went on for 25 minutes non-stop just bitching about RE5, and we had to cut one of our segments.

I think it's a great idea. I'd certainly listen to it.

It's an interesting idea. Just know that it'll be a lot of work!

I think it's a great idea!

It has come up a few times (though I think it was a site staff podcast) but it never really got off the ground.
