Forums - Sales - Why did Square Enix stick with Sony?

thread fails... Better question why did square enix publis all those jrpg only for the 360?

My guess is the next one FF won't be on the PS3 unless the hate Wii.

Because FFXIII was started before Square-Enix knew how the market would take shape. They bet big on Sony because all the analysts thought the PS3 would sell better than the PS2 and the Wii would sell worse than the GC. Yes, developing on Wii would make a lot more sense for a lot of the big Japanese devs, but they really bet on the wrong system, and for a long time denied that the Wii is a viable platform for big blockbuster games mostly out of their own stubbornness.

besides, you really picked a bad example of a company as FFXIII is the only game square enix has made for the PS3 so far. Versus will make its way out eventually, but DQX (which is arguably bigger) is going to the Wii, and the Wii has a lot of other games like Dragon Quest Swords and FF:CC.

Maybe if you say it enough mate, it might actually become true.

Go on tell me, what "blockbuster" titles would sell better on the Wii in comparison to the PS3?

Edit - Now you are comparing the PS2 MH titles to MH3 on Wii? Clutching onto straws it seems, the franchise gained huge traction after the MH titles on PS2 released might have to do with it. Also no doubt in my mind DQ X will go on a handheld.

Kingdom Hearts 3 would do better on Wii than PS3.  I'd say the same for Dragon Quest X, which will be on Wii anyway.

I think DQX should be on the DS, so far the Wii has shown us it cannot sell has the handhelds, look at MH3 numbers. And, no FFXIII is bigger than DQ, JAPAN is not the world.

Well, if the Wii can't sell games, then the PS2 must have been horrible, as Monster Hunter Tri- outsold Monster Hunter 2 by 33%. Some franchises sell better on handhelds or consoles, so that would sort of be like saying DS can't sell software because Modern Warfare Mobilized flopped.

@joke thread idea

I actually think this is an alt account, but I haven't made up my mind based on the evidence yet, so we'll see.

a 33% increase is not a big jump.  Considering the increased popurality of the series in japan since the ps2 iteration one would think the wii version would do better, if anything it should tell capcom to keep it portable.

Well untill FFXIII they didnt release any PS3 games... and judging by the sales of FFCC:CB I think they are happy that they released the game on a Sony and not Nintendo platform

Looking at sales of DQIX, I think they could've done better.

True, for DQ, tough seeing how a main FF game was allways technically advanced, I doubt they would have gone the DS route. Also, lets dont forget that CC will pass the remake of FF3 next week and it will become the best selling portable FF game ever

So yeah, I agree that SE could have choosen the DS/PSP route, but it seems that they decided that a technically more advanced game will be a better option. And teh sales even tough dont have the potential they might have had on the PS2, they will still be strong

I was kidding about FFXIII PSP.  They've already got their MH-clone Agito there anyway.  Honestly, I think they've made the best decisions they could with FF and DQ in terms of platforms.

Crisis Core however, should've been a PS2 game.  It'd have sold twice as much by now if it were.

33% is a pretty big increase considering most other series have been massively declining on consoles since last gen.  Outside MH3, DQ Swords, RE5/UC and Nintendo games, have any Japanese series actually improved?

We haven't gotten that many PS3 games from Square Enix. To be honest, I can't even think of one right now....other than PSone Classics.

Even if the PS3 was getting a lot of games from SE, it makes sense because PlayStation is known for having a lot of RPG's. PS3 has a good RPG userbase... I think.

Fuck Steve Harvey. FREE EARL!

Final Fantasy Versus XIII will be the GREATEST game EVER made!!!

I'd take a bullet for Square-Enix!

Did I ever say they would sell better on Wii? It looks like all I said is it would make more sense to develop blockbuster games on Wii, which it does. Larger install base + lower dev costs = lower risk for mainstream games and potentially larger profits.

Pretty much any big "blockbuster" title has a big potential to sell more on Wii than PS3 or X360. Blockbuster titles by definition are mainstream. Look at blockbuster movies, they are mainstream too. FFXIII is mainstream and all of Japan (and the gaming world) knows about the game. GTA is played by teenage girls, and one of my friends soley bought a PS3 for his wife to play GTA, which is a blockbuster mainstream game.

In Japan, you are talking a 9m to 4m advantage for Wii, and world wide a 32m unit lead. Heck, 8 games (Wii Sports wasn't counted even though the PS3 got bundles too) on Wii have sold more than the best selling title on PS3, and that number is going to increase very soon. The Wii took the crown from the PS2, and could easily sell lots of games if 3rd parties actually put quality titles on the Wii. Just looking at the music/rythm genre, pretty much every single game sold better on Wii than PS3.

Can you seriously believe that any "blockbuster" (which also indicates it is mainstream to some extent) wouldn't have the potential to sell better on Wii?

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy
