Attach rates is a cheap copout.  The attach rate thing has been shot down a million times by many franchises that sell just as well on PS3 as on previous systems.  Not only that but FF has already proven it can sell on small userbases, and sell just as well as the previous FF games on large userbases.  What evidence do you have that small userbases actually effect the sales of FF?  That would be the better question.

Its not a copout. Its a realistic expectation when we take a relatively new PS2 and a new gen FF X and compare it with a relatively new PS3 with a new gen FF XIII to determine what should be our realistic expectations.

I dont understand how factoring in userbase is somehow a copout. So if i sell 4 products to 20 potential customers yet someone sells 5 products to 200 do you think im a better salesperson? You probably wont because it goes against your argument, but in reality its a good variable to compare and contrast to determine success or relative success.

you didn't bring any evidence about how userbase effects the sales of FF.  In reality FF7 and FF10 sold about the same as all the other FF games on the same system regardless of the fact that the userbase multiplied several times.

Im not talking about LTD sales. Im saying its th emost comparable for what we should expect to see first week. We all know over a generation the Playstation brand in particular expanded so fast and branched out so we didnt see linear growth in terms of first week sales. But i think comparing a new gen FF to a new gen FF is an accurate portrayal of expectations.

Seriously? Whats your problem its like youre on a crusade to damn the numbers regardless of what they will be. How is expecting a new gen FF with 4 million consoles sold to sell the same as a new gen FF with 5 million consoles sold gotten you so riled up. Its realistic. Its logical.

I'm not damning the numbers.  The numbers are fine, it is pretty much what i was expecting.  What i have a problem with is your logic.  I can actually see both sides of the argument.

And i can see yours. But im not extrapolating its sales agianst all FF releases. I think when we see a new gen FF we can compare it to another new gen FF as to what we should expect.

If i had some motive to try to underscore this conversation i would have tried to draw a correlation to FF12 vs the install base which would mean FF13 could sell about 100k first week if we went on that, haha.

That's hardly newsworthy Soriku. You should at least wait till numbers to post an article.

To summarize.

There will either be lots of people talking about PS3 domination.

Or there will be a handful of people trying to say "its still pretty good" and then laughing maniacally from behind their PC screens. And a larger group of people saying "its still pretty good" and then crying and sobbing being their PC screens.

Then there will be those that say "Hahaha it ONLY sold 1 million copies. Flop!"

That can easily be justified though.  If it does 1 million first day it will probably end up being the lowest selling Final Fantasy since 1991.

well, FF X sold 1.9 on an install base of 5.2 million. A 37% attach rate.

Which means for the same attach rate FF 13 would have to sell 1.517 million first week to be on par with FF X, the second best selling FF.

do you think square really cares about attach rate?  Honestly?  This is the most expensive FF ever, it's not getting cheaper.  I'm not saying it's a failure if it sells less than the previous ones, but it isn't going to be as profitable.

Oh. Good thing im not on the SEfinancialReportsForStockholdersChartz.com forum.

If you completely throw out the significance of attach rates and user bases, you also throw out the notion that one console gaining huge market share should encourage third party developers to make games for that console.

Should games like Final Fantasy be thought of as in no way limited by attach rates? Should they be developed for whatever console Square Enix feels like developing for, completely regardless of user base?

The attach rate data is definitely misleading if you're comparing early gen and late gen, though. A sequel to a popular game isn't going to sell ten times as much just because there are ten times as many consoles out there, after all.

Brief version: If Square Enix weren't concerned with the size of the PS3 user base in some way limiting their sales, would they have bothered developing the game for 360 as well?

the numbers don't back you up at all.  We are talking about Japan only so you can throw the 360 out the window, the 360 version wouldn't exist in a Japan only world.  Explain to me which FF games sold more on a bigger userbase?  I'm pretty sure It went like this FF7>FF8>FF9 and FFX>12.

In Japan they don't seem to be limited by attach rates.  People will buy it regardless, the evidence is all there in the sales history.

And what exactly "over" means. It could very well be a 1.3-1.5 opening week when bundles are counted, which would be absolutely sensational.

1 million+ day 1? Hells yeah!
