Forums - General Discussion - Blu-Ray beats HD DVD in software sales 55:45 week ending 10/28

Never realised the numbers were so close!

This isn't an election guys - its not like whoever ends up over 51% "wins" by default. What is important, is that HD-DVD is taking *almost* the same market share that BluRay is - so there is ZERO chance it will be dropped. The numbers would have to be something like 80:20 for the format to be irrelevant.

What is also more interesting - is that HD-DVD is clawing back "year" market share. From two weeks ago, BluRay lead has dropped from 32% to 28%. If this continues, both formats will be within 10% of each other (total sales) by the end of the year.

Are all these "pack-in" titles included as sales? Will Spiderman3 pack-in sales be included?

It's still losing despite having a big release like Transformers (arguably the biggest of the year) going up against no new releases on the Blu-Ray front. From Februray to September Blu-Ray was outselling HD DVD every week around 67:33, sometimes going as high as 72:28, and as low as 62:38.

All the gains HD DVD has made the past two works are attributed directly to Transformers, and they should be reversed with the release of SM4, Ratatouille, and Cars over this week and next week, going up against no major releases on the HD DVD side.

And no, pack-ins are not included. If they were, than 300 would not hold the honor of highest selling high def release. Casino Royale and Talladega Nights both sold over 500,000 if you include pack-ins, while 300 only sold a little over 300,000 discs sold.

I don't see this being decided anytime soon. As others have said the HD formats have not been adopted by the majority of consumers and given the decent quality of upscaled standard DVD's it may be a long time before an HD disc format is adopted.

In fact it could become a moot point as more HD content is delivered online bypassing formats completely.

With this holiday seeing $99 HD DVD players available at WalMart some of the PS3 as a blu ray player advantage will be lost.

Shams how the hell do you see that happening ?

Week 10/28: BD 55, HD 45
Week 10/21: BD 51, HD 49

They already are losing ground after the initial Transformers sales jump.

hddvd going up against Spiderman, Ratatouille, Cars, Die hard. Even more telling is, rest of the year there are 47 hddvd products going up against 86 from Br.

Not only does Br have more huge hit exclusives, overall they nearly have double the products available.

Theres also the reality that every big release on both formats BR/hddvd sales are 2-1

Damn hd dvd just needs to throw in the towel. People obviously want blu ray to win. Cut the crap toshiba u lost, well, are currently losing and i hope it stays this way.
I think sony should just bite the bullet and match the price, even if they lose some money they will no doubt gain market share, which in the long run will give them money. Plus it seems fox and disney are very strong supporters of blu-ray. just imagine folks lining up to get star wars and toy story as a blu ray exclusive. Honestly waht does hd dvd have that can counter that? Transformers would have been the saving grace it needs but it didnt, not yet at least...

Also, lets just say blu ray drops to 198, based off of exclusive movies i would think people with half a brain would realize that "hey blu ray has more movie that are big hits ,minus transformers, it has spider man, a slew of disney films, and other movies that are a big deal" so hd-dvd would obly have 2 reasons to getit,100 dollars cheaper and transformers. possibly shrek 3 if it comes out this holiday season

People do want Blu-Ray to win. Unfortunitly people also want HD-DVD to win. Otherwise, ya know. No one would be buying HD-DVD movies.

They're currently neutral like Warner Bros., as both are owned by Time Warner, though they seem to be favoring Blu-Ray. Their only two release so far are Hairspray and the upcoming Rush Hour 3, both of which are releasing over the holidays, with the HD DVD version coming sometime in '08.

I suppose your right, it really was a slap in the face to the consumers though when paramont and pixar pledged alliegence to the Hepres Dick dvd camp. Bluray was always selling the best, just when you thought it was safe to determine a winner and upgrade to hi def the two said companies take a crap all over peoples faces and have no remorse about it.

HD DVD has Shrek 3, Hairspray (each of which lend themselves to high def visuals and audio). But the key is that HD DVD can give you these movies and the medium on which to play them at an affordable price, Blu ray cannot.

starcraft - Playing Games = FUN, Talking about Games = SERIOUS

Actually dabaus513, HD DVD was selling the best until Sony Trojan-horsed Blu ray into the PS3, forcing gaming consumers to consume a cost that should have been bourne by the industry. And while we are talking about slaps in the face to the consumer, why do you think Disney is exclusive??? Do you think they do it out of the goodness of their hearts. NO. They are paid, just like Paramount.
