Forums - Gaming - Why is it that the Modern Warfare 2 "No Russian" scene went too far?

Maybe because of 9/11, people don't like the idea of terrorism, and stuff like that. It bothers them.

This scene may remind people of that and bother them, I personally don't care.

Why is anything 9/11 taboo?  Is it because it's in our lifetime?  Is that why it's alright to make jokes all day about Hiroshima?

Is their tragedy somehow less because I didn't wake up one morning and see that on TV?

Oh, and another thing that pisses me off...

They give you the option to SKIP the scene. If you dont want controversy... Dont play it!

I am an overly sensitive person, I take things way to personally, and I empathize instinctively with other. That part made me really uncomfortable, almost ill to watch from the eyes of a terrorist (kinda) while these people get mowed down. I've walked out of movies before because watching others suffer makes me hurt. I almost stopped playing the campaign at that part because it caused me pain. I won't play through that again. Just how I see it.

And I can get that, the scene was supposed to be uncomfortable, I just don't know why everyone is making a huge deal out of that one scene when there are so many other bad scenes out there too.

I guess this wasn't something that was supposed to be answered, it was just a random thought for the day and felt like typing.

When you went on a killing spree against civilians in GTA, or even Elder Scrolls, that was you. You did it, you weren't asked or expected to, it was just an option that you took (and the games would suck if civilians couldn't die).

In MW2, you are told and expected to carry out a terrorist attack on a bunch of civilians (for spurious reasons). You don't have to, although you are expected and told to, as part of your 'duty'.

Beyond that, it's a terrorism simulation. That's a much scarier and more offensive proposition than what's in GTA for your average American (or Russian as it turns out).

Personally it doesn't matter to me. It's a bit tasteless, but I'm not the kind of person to censor things I find tasteless, ultimately it's not that big a deal and it's not going to get kids into terrorism...

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

I personally view most people as ignorant and simple-minded, they don't understand and don't try to understand events like Hiroshima and the impact it had on people. I'm pretty sure 20 years from now, if people are playing this, they won't care about The Airport scene.

The scene wasn't going too far in the first place, it went perfectly with what was going on in the game. You are terrorists, what the hell are you suppose to do?

Odd. Future. Wolf. Gang. Kill. Em. All. OFWGKTA Don't give a fuck!

Fuck Steve Harvey. FREE EARL!

Final Fantasy Versus XIII will be the GREATEST game EVER made!!!

I'd take a bullet for Square-Enix!

Am I the only person who thought it was awesome until the end of that stupid mission? I would have loved to play as an undercover CIA or the bad guys.

You have the outright option to skip that scene entirely.  And if you don't skip it, you are not forced to pull the trigger of your gun.  They never even explicitly tell you to kill anyone or try to hold you to some sort of duty... the only thing they say is "Remember, no Russian."

Because apparently putting your average 24 TV episode in a videogame freaks people out which is kinda ... ummm not smart if you asked me.

The mission sucked btw it didn't do anything for the story and the story of the game itself is some dumb fan fiction that you would expect someone wrote when the internet was still new and they finally found a place to release their verbal vomit which they call ideas.

Kinda went OT there but I also felt like typing
