Forums - Nintendo - IGN N-Podcast 60 and Summary - How Wii doesn't even compare to Current Gen.

I'd like to sidestep all of the notions of whether one can be happy with a singular console, as it seems patently clear that if one were not happy with their lot they would simply buy another console and each console has more than enough quality content to satisfy anyone who does not spend an unnatural amount of time gaming, and address the original podcast itself. While Malstrom's summary was heavy-handed and partisan, it was not that far off the mark, and frankly I find it concerning that such individuals are considered (even if only by themselves) the voices of true gaming.

First, there's the idea of achievements and its connection to the fabricated 'hardcore lifestyle'. Does one really need any more incentive to play a game then simply deriving enjoyment from playing the game itself? Honestly, stop and think about that one. It gives you extra incentive to play a video-game regardless of its quality. In other words, it motivates one to continuing consuming and burning through games, and serves to both legitimize the ballooning pricetags of games by offering more 'content' and softens the blow if the game is inadequate because you are still able to flaunt how much money you have spent to perpetuate your 'hardcore lifestyle'.

What is going on? Why would you not want to play a game for any other reason than the fact that it is a good game? Can anyone really honestly say that their valuable time and money is better spent on elevating one's hardcore status by playing Cars Race-O-Rama than by playing a legitimately well-made game? The whole Achievements phenomenon is nothing more than mutual exoneration, telling yourself that it's all right to keep spending ridiculous amounts of money and time and pledging allegiance to the hardcore community because at least you're not alone! Every $59.99 spent is another opportunity to catapult yourself to the upper echelons of the gaming elite, regardless if the games that fuel your ascent are unsatisfactory and callow.

I would have to say my experience with the Wii has been the least lonely of any experience with video games. Granted, this is because I play it with actual people that I know in real life, friends and family as well as newbies and veterans, instead of gazing upon everyone's collections of virtual trophies and taking satisfaction in knowing that I'm not the only one slogging through Avatar.

I'm not saying that there isn't any place for the HD Twins or any system, as they all are able to fill important niches and provide unique experiences. I'm saying that anyone who plays a game for any reason other than to play a fun game should re-examine their priorities and try and find a more productive and healthy (and less needlesly expensive) way to experiene accomplishment. No amount of badges or trinkets should be able to justify the playing of Pixar-License-Game X in the eyes of any true gaming enthusiast.

These 'journalists' do nothing but play games, for both work and leisure, and it is only natural that they seek validation for the extravagant triviality of their existence, and achievements seem to do the trick.

The whole show just reeks of self-importance. They believe that the small community that they speak for represents an unshakeable foundation that all game companies should build off of, rather than the fly-by-night demographic that is everyone else. Man-children they may be, but can they honestly convince themselves that within five to seven years that they and their audience will be able to realistically keep up with the demands of such a resource-intensive lifestyle? That anyone beyond that brief window between childhood and adult responsibility will be able to justifiably pump as much time or money into the 'hardcore lifestyle'? That it makes more sense to dedicate not just two but all three consoles towards the 22+ male bachelors of the world rather than focus on entire families? Their disconnect from reality and their increasing irrelevance is staggering. Their breed is facing extinction, and I say good riddance to such ignorance and bigotry.

dude i cant read all that, my eyes would explode lol

Wow. I'm a bit surprised to see the reactions here.

Yes, we at the Nintendo team think Nintendo has screwed up this generation, an yes all you Nintendo fanboys seem to be blinded somehow.

You just can't ignore the Wii's lack of horsepower, lack of quality games and lack of achievements. The Wii is basically a GameCube with a flawed controller, and we from IGN are attempting a wake-up call for Nintendo. Things need to change, otherwise Nintendo might as well drop out of the gaming business and start creating toys for kids.

The biggest problem is that the consumers haven't given them a reason to make anything else. That's also the third-party problems. As long as the so-called hardcore can't remove the stick up their ass they have had since Nintendo 64 the situation won't get better. Yes, i am blaming the consumer. Nintendo's main purpose should be making money, and that is what they are doing, contrary to their competition

And achievements are nothing but pointless bragging, I miss the days when we played games to be entertained

@ bolded

Gaming journalists are the guardians of all the Holly Knowledge, they're always right, and we are wrong. Pitty

P.S - Glad to see that VGchartz is turning into such an important website that staff from IGN come to post. Or even people care to create a fake account just for this thread. That's awesome. Congrats Brett x)

I'm a Nintendo fanboy and I've always been but I'm not a blind idiot and I admitted a long time ago that the Wii, by far is the worst console this gen, lacking in horse power and extremely far back in great games.

I'm not much of a game anymore but WOW, to say the Wiimote is a flawed controller is downright stupid. So you're telling me X-Box controller which is a more than decent controller but can't use motion controls > a wiimote which can handle both regular games and motion control, and can be switched out for a different type of controller in multiple games? That doesn't even begin to make sense. Wii can handle both, X-Box can only handle one.

And the thing about achievements is probaly the dumbest thing I've ever heard. I guess gaming before this gen never really mattered in the first place. If you honestly feel good for getting achievements vs. playing the game, then that's just sad. You might as well not even play the game or care about what you're playing if you just want achievements.

I have a  Wii and a 360. I readily admit I could be happier with my Wii. I cannot think of anything it stands to gain from the 360 though. If I had to choose between them it would be the Wii everytime. Not even a moments hesitation quite frankly. I seriously cannot think of one feature from the 360 I would even want on my Wii, or even notice if it were implmented.

I would love to have the "Deal of the Week" on XBLA games. There are soooo many more VC/WiiWare titles I would buy...

That's actually the plan, we'll be working them up from the NES. My wife discovered Harvest Moon when it came out on the virtual console, Zelda Link to the Past she wants to try, and we figured chronological is a good way to go through games.

If you ever want to see your wife again, keep her away from Harvest Moon 64. That stuff is digital crack!

I'm a Wii only owner, and the only things that could make the Wii better would be a Wii Katamari game ...

You, sir, must purchase Rabbids Go Home immediately.

I mean I have nothing against criticism against nintendo (I do it plenty myself) when it is intelligent and backed by real evidence and logic, but the majority of theres is just stupid fanboyish ranting that makes little to no sense, and is backed up by nothing except for their narrow and stuborn views.

Well put. This pretty much encapsulates my view as well. Lord knows there's plenty of legitimate things to gripe about when it comes to Nintendo, so why resort to, well, stuff like this?

I used to visit IGN religiously, starting when it was just N64.com. About two years ago though I started tapering off, and now I only go there for the Release Dates. It honestly makes me kind of sad, but what can you do?

Not bad, not bad at all. Whoever made this: 10/10.

For about two seconds I was so tempted to make an alt mimicking Peer Schneider and then ask one of our German members to write something short and snappy for me to say

So tempted

So tempted to get banned

I doubt that that is really Matt from IGN, but on the slim chance it is, read through the thread, see how many multiplatform gamers who own two, or even all three of the consoles disagree with pretty much everything you've said, read the reasons they've given for doing so, take note that the majority of the few that agreed with you don't even own a Wii, and try and think about what that might mean for your employment status when people inevitably get bored of a weekly tirade of BS and stop visiting the site anymore.

@noname
Hum. You got me there. I still probably wouldn't pay much attention to it, but I would like that feature. Also, you just reminded me that I need to play Rabbids Go Home. To the Gamefly!

I really can't understand why Nintendo hasn't copied achievements.

Seriously and I know some people will think this is trolling but I really think Nintendo has been incredibly lazy for at least a year now. It's too bad there isn't much real competition between the Wii and HD consoles because I think Wii gamers would really benefit from it.

Eh

They kind of did already in Wii Sports Resort

Unless you mean we should be able to measure our gaming peens online, in which case I'm not sure I see the point

Add Metroid Prime 3, Metroid Prime Trilogy, Wario Land: Shake It!, Smash Bros. Brawl, and perhaps a few other's I've missed.  Miyamoto said in an interview that he likes in-game acheivements or something or another - it was very recent but I can't find it.

I was wrong about Paper Scissors, but I still disagree.

The podcast is worse than the description. It is a bunch of cackling and stipidity, that cannot be done justice by anything Malstrom says.

I'd say I want you to decide for yourself, but then you'd have to give them hits.

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.
