Forums - Nintendo - The Malstrom thread

Wow, what a giant tool. It's an Adventure game, barely different from Indigo Prophecy... adventure games are one of the founding genres of gaming. So because its tutorial of the control system is based on real life actions it's now a parody and crappy? Malstrom is a hilarious charicature of a hypocritical fanboy. Defend Nintendo for its support of classic gaming then trash on Sony when they develop a game in a genre with one of the most rich histories in gaming. Indeed the fanboy (of any console) is a hilarious creature. It's too bad Malstrom didn't shut the fuck up like he promised he would after Nintendo went to low plastic game cases.

^Actually Malstrom would not be a fan of Adventure games, because they are narrative games, and not arcadey in any way

Can I just second this as it's so spot on.

Not very game is for everyone, just like not every film is.  In addition, the very definition of what is a game is open to change and will change over time almost certainly.  Heavy Rain is an attempt to deliver an adult (as in mature themes) experience that is interactive.  As naznatips said it is clearly an attempt to take one of the original genres of gaming, the adventure game and use it as the basis for something that is sombre and based on themes that aren't necessarily of global appeal.

I'm not sure I'll like it, but its childish and immature to sound of about content that you're simply not willing to understand in context.

The goal I see so far is to put you into your character, doing the normal stuff, getting to know them via that mechanism (and by extension learning the game).  It's pretty obvious that the tone is going to change markedly and the point is to make it matter to you emotionally.

I have no idea if the game succeeds at this, in fact I've rather cautious it will as I found Indigo Prophecy very flawed if facinating in concept, but I won't shit on something for not being a 'pure' game where somehow pressing a button to make a bunch of imaginery pixels collect a meaningless item that gives you points because that's clearly all that games are.

I'm not saying everyone should try everything or even like, but everyone should definately stop trying to limit others based on their own preferences.  It's just childish.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

"I can't believe they implemented a mechanic for drinking orange juice."

That, and the teeth brushing, are like something from WarioWare, only that's a spoof.

"(hint; tutorials are usually very, very boring)"

Hint: That's not a good thing, since that's the first impression when it comes to gameplay.

But he's a fan of old-style PC games, this sort of thing should be right up his alley, nominally.

Also, he's warping the perception of internal Nintendo. When has Nintendo ever been about putting a lot of story in their games? The complaint is always that they put too little in there. Where is he deriving this intense, but unspoken, desire that they seem to have to do "story." Aside from Sakamoto, of course, who is far removed from the workings of EAD anyway, and is off in his own division.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

He's actually stated he like adventure games, but knows they are niche. He's not mocking the adventure aspect. He's mocking the notion that the developer is so entranced with this game, when it's nothing more than an adventure game.

The actual mocking of the game is in italics, which means it's from the email. So you people thinking he's mocking the gameplay have it out of context.

I've played plenty of good games with boring tutorials. But, you see, I play the actual game as well before I make up my mind, which is obviously above the hallowed and revered Malstrom. Seriously, how has he gathered such a large following being such an ass to every single thing that doesn't match his preference? He wants everyone to love the same things as him and those who don't are morons or fanboys. He's acting like some of our 12-13 year old members defending to the death their favorite games simply out of some bewildered sense of duty with little to no actual substance in the arguments themselves.

In fact don't most Zelda games start with a pretty dull "walk around this town with a POS wooden sword"?  I'm sure if someone stopped playing Zelda before it got out of that first town they'd think the game was pretty crappy and just about fishing.

Again, it's not him bashing the gameplay. That was the email. He was calling on the developer for the attitude.

Malstom actually calls on Zelda games for things like that.
