Michael Pachter – Uncharted 2 sales lackluster

In an exclusive interview with Critical Gamer, infamous industry analyst Michael Pachter discusses the disappointing sales of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.

“Sales of Uncharted 2 fell precipitously in November, and other than pressure from Call of Duty, it’s really hard to fathom why.” He continues “I’m sure that the game will get a boost from winning the VGA’s Game of the Year, but it’s only sold 650,000 in the U.S. so far, which is really shocking given its review scores.” He concludes “I expect God of War 3 to perform better, but am troubled by the relatively lackluster sales of Uncharted 2.”

Back in November Playstation VP Phil Rosenburg announced sales of over a million for the game worldwide, as reported by Kotaku. Although a fairly impressive figure for a PS3 exclusive, it still pales in comparison to the 2.6 million units sold of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. However it’s still relatively early in terms of the game’s shelf-life, so we’ll have to wait and see how the game performs in the long run.

I think these are VERY GOOD sales, its way ahead of Uncharted 1 if you align launches

Pachter had high expectations! & ofcourse GOW3 will perform better!

off topic: I have a feeling that we might be setting ourselves for a disappointment with GOW3 sales.

& it also means many people expecting 3 - 4 million for the game were wrong & I was closer than them

I expect 2 - 3 Million LTD for it

tell this to people like kantor who feel it will do 3 - 4 Million & will somehow beat the GOW1 & GOW 2 sales

Uncharted Drake Fortunes = 600k NPD LTD

Uncharted 2 = more than 650k

vgchartz uncharted = 1.18 million

PS3 can't sell hardcore games?

He doesn't understand it? How about sales in US negatively impacted by dominance of 360 over PS3 for HD gaming coupled with strong online titles with proven, huge popularity on 360?

ND stated before it launched they'd be happy with 2.5 M LTD and that seems pretty likely to happen, so clearly the developer is sensible and understands the limits of the market they are releasing in.

Honestly, doesn't this guy actually, you know, understand the dynamics and market share of the market he provides analysis for?

Why is everyone surprised PS3 exclusives don't sell like 360 exclusives in US? It's so obvious!

Consoles are expensive. I suspect there are a fair few 360 owners in US who would like to play Uncharted 2, but I also suspect many of them aren't going to fork out for a PS3 to do so.

What I find so astonishing about Patcher is how business naive he often seems. It's as if he simply expects a good game with great reviews to suddenly cause another 6M PS3s to sell and the game to then sell 2 or 3M in US.

If it was that simple then free online with MW2 on PS3, Killzone 2, etc would have shifted lots of PS3s in America.

It isn't that simple, Michael! Reversing a strong momentum takes huge effort - just ask MS about trying to reverse momentum in Japan if you need another example.
