Forums - Gaming - Why did Bayonetta fail in Japan?

I played the demo (PS3) the other day. I assume the demo is still based on the gimped PS3 version and that graphically the western release will look a bit better. But even with the PS3 fix up I don't plan to get this game. It looks (plays) good but not that good. I also found it hyper-sexualised to the point where it's rather cheesy and off putting, and almost misogynistic.

The demo was fun enough, but not so much fun that it needs to be put in my rather meagre game buying budget (both money and time) over the suite of games I already know I want to get.

Perhaps once it hits the bargain used bins I'll pick it up. (Just got R:FOM used for $15 ($10 US), I wasn't planning to get this title, but a friend just got it and we want to do some online gaming and at $15NZ you simply can't go wrong with a AA title from any genre).

Ps3 version was downgraded and 360 has a low userbase

There's a limited number of horny Otakus you can exploit...

I thought the Bayonetta was too masculine looking (she`s more masculine looking than pretty boy Dante! lol) but I don`t know. She does seem like a sexy video game version of Sarah Palin in a better body. You can`t expect every new IP to be a hit right away like Devil May Cry. Considering the current climate of home console gaming in Japan, Bayonetta did alright.

Btw the 360 version of Bayonetta beat the 360 version of DMC4. So at least it beat DMC4 in ONE platform. Considering that Tekken 6 on PS3 outsold the 360 version 3.75:1 in Japan and Bayonetta`s ratio was "only" 2.11, it`s very clear that a signficiant number of Japanese 360 owners also own a PS3 and HD twin owners in Japan mostly bought it for 360 because of what they read in the Famitsu review. Unless PS3 owners without a 360 shunned the game because they refused to play what they saw as an inferior version (that`s just silly OCD IMO. They shouldn`t be depriving themselves of a potentially great game because of this).

Because its a bogus game. They thought they made the protagonist so hot but really she was some ugly ass b**ch.

not a failure at all. 300k in Japan is good, it will have decent sales in the west as well. That is only 10k less than DMC4 on PS3, or 80k less than both combined. DMC has brand recognition so it's not a surprise.

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

DMC4 was an established IP selling on the most popular console of the time. Bayonetta is a new IP selling on a tiny install base.

Bayonetta did great

Where's this DMC Wii version?

So its not fair to assume that great games like this deserve better sales?
That we aren't over early Ps3/Xbox 360 time when Japan didin't buy games because they weren't made for their taste?
Only titles that can succeed in Hd consoles must be sequels to popular series?Even Final Fantasy had to start at 1.

Take my love, take my land..

How did Bayonetta fail? It greatly surpassed expectations in just a few weeks.

I'm very surprised some people think it sold badly!

The title is crummy doesn't grab you by the balls and tell you what the game is about, neither does the hype. Watching the videos tell the basic plot was pretty boring, telling you that she lost her kid because of some such, not very appealing and neither as gripping. There is nothing about the game that leaps at me to make me play the game. And... no bouncing boobies.
