Forums - Nintendo - Don't feel bad for abandoning IGN, so has 75% of the rest of their audience

Who doesn't use Gametrailers now? It's got the perfect layout. It's got tons of depth and awesome little things for those who care about getting GT points and stuff, but if I just want to keep up with the latest announcement trailers and stuff it's all right, there on the home page, infront of my nose.

N4G probably hurt alot of the big sites too, no point in using IGN for gaming news when you can get it on N4G earlier.

Let me get this straight:

Th general public : Wii fans, have left IGN which has caused a major decline in viewership. Now, where did those Wii fans go ?

Good question, I don't know the answer to that. Speaking for myself, I come here as I find this site reports about stuff I like reading about. Sales success, and reports information that I find valuable or interesting in regards to the games I like. Of course, it is just my theory based on what I see: that most of the IGN fans going are Nintendo consumers; they used to be very numerous on that site, but now seem to be in the minority. I could be wrong and it may be that they are driving away Sony and Microsoft Consumers as well, and Nintendo consumers are just no longer very vocal; somehow I doubt that.

Your belief is the same as people claiming this site is driving 360 fans away and you using its decline as an excuse.  Truthfully, IGN is more than just gaming. A lot of website have seen such decline and the biggest evidence, as popular as the Wii is, it's a very small userbase online. Most Wii owners have never heard of IGN.

I'm with you 100% on your first couple of sentence but the sentences following I'm not so sure about that. Some people seem to think Expanded Audience 'members' are just a bunch of ameba's. not taking into account that many of them are lasped gamers as well. Or even PC gamers who don't feel PS3 or 360 are 'hardcore' enough for them. In other words I think many Wii gamers are just as Savvy and aware of and in tune with what's going on as any other console owners. Sure, maybe some of the older retirement homes folks may not be but to say Wii has a small online userbase isn't accurate.

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

I check IGN daily, not for more then 5 minutes at a time mind you, just to check if they have any exclusive news

So, IGN, alienated the general public, the majority being nintendo fans with pro-sony and unrelevant weird articles. Wise

I never said half the stuff you are saying, I said the userbase is smaller. The smartest members of this site and on Gaf are wii owners, but the vast majority of these gaming websites are made of HD owners.

The likelihood of IGN's declining popularity being caused by Matt Cassamasina is pretty small.

Tossing out ~9.5 scores for every big game that comes around is probably the bigger reason. Their reviews don't have much credibility these days, and their reviews are the reason they became popular in the first place.

I still can't believe they gave Resistance 2 a 9.5 just because they were afraid to say Gears 2 was the better game. Killzone 2 ended up scoring lower than Resistance 2 as a result of the inflated score, and I think they're the only site that rated Resistance the higher of the two. The actual text of each review paints Killzone 2 to be the much better game. It was like "This game is really good. 9.5" compared to "This game is so awesome! 9.4." Same could be said about Resistance 2 vs Gears 2, just change that 9.4 to a 9.5.

I think that is a general trend among many review sources. It is just the larger the website, the more likely that kind of stuff is going to attract the negative press on the subject. This has a lot to do with the actual income the site receives. I can't say for certain because I haven't done any extensive research, but the whole Gerstman/Gamespot/Eidos thing was very well publicized. IGN hasn't had a scandal on that level, but a lot of people have suggested  this sort of thing goes on. Other fairly well documented cases have been Rockstar's free GTA4 review vacation.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.
