Forums - Sales Discussion - Valkyria Chronicles vs Lost Odyssey

Valkyrie Chronicles will most likely get adjusted down heavily if LO NPD from last year is anything to go off of. I still dont understand why people like to compare the two, VC is an SRPG (from a japanese developer) and LO is a traditional JRPG (also from a japanese developer).

either way, i really liked LO (although not nearly perfect), and im definitely looking forward to playing Valkyria Chronicles (just waiting to pick it up cheap cuz im poor)

In the end I believe it will be VC winning the sales battle hands down. And for the developer/publisher Valkyria Chronicles will make much more money than Lost Oddesy and in the end that is what is key. The people making the game make more money therefore come out with multiple sequels (hopefully for PS3 as well as PSP).

@Carl - As far as comparing game quality goes, Metacritic and gamerankings mean absolutley nothing. This is true with practically every game, but even moreso with JRPGs.

I'm going to have to agree with neoraf here and say that the critics dropped the ball on this one...HARD. Lost Oddysey has the production values and gameplay of a AAA game.

I am a person who favors the PS3, but Lost Oddyssey is. Not only the best JRPG, but possibly the best rpg of this gen so far.

Nonsense. I loved Lost Odyssey, really I do, but that's just crazy talk. My biggest complaints were the shoddy presentation with tons of technical issues. Whether you like the gameplay (I did) or not doesn't make it AAA, it took a lot of things from different games and put it out there.

Lost Odyssey is in my top 5 games for this generation, but it is definitely not some masterpiece.

I guess VC is massively over tracking here... along with many games....

I just need to ask...

What makes you say that?

Well, the two reference points we have (VC launch month, VC ltd through Jan 2009) both have VGC overtracking NPD by 20-30%, which is too high a margin to count for Canada/Mexico (where VC was given a "limited" launch anyway).  We need a new NPD ltd leak to make sure though, but it's looking like VGC was overtracking it from day one.

It'd be nice if Sega gave out shipment figures too.  Maybe when VC2 gets closer to release, they might throw sales in a PR if the turnaround's as dramatic as VGC implies?

Or maybe... NPD undertracked...?

Nice one.  If I remember correctly, NPD doesn't try to account for Wal-Mart or Amazon.  I've always found it funny that people try to argue that VG Chartz is bogus by using logic that boils down to, "NPD doesn't account for two of the largest retailers on the planet, so when their numbers aren't as large as places that don't ignore two of the largest retailers on the planet, it means NPD is more accurate."

No, NPD acounts for them, they just don't get figures directly from them like they do other retailers.  What that means is they use equations to try and estimate what their total sales are just like VG Chartz does.  So, basically the difference is NPD has hard data coupled with some estimations.  VGchartz just has estimations.

No, that's not right either. NPD just has a larger retail base than VGC does as both services get data from retailers. NPD has ~55-60% of the retailers in the US giving exact numbers, they have to estimate the rest.

VC will sell more cause it was released more recently. Plus, people tend to talk about it more. I remember hearing about LO when it was first released, saw someone play it, then never heard about it again.

I believe that VC was better put together than LO also. LO has framerate issues (I'm very picky). Also, I remember the first time I saw someone play LO, the game froze at the very first battle when he tried to make his first action. Talk about your first impressions.

NDP Generally overtracks xbox 360 games though in order to fuel the microsoft machine in america, but still, VC is doing great.

numbers are now updated

So next week it could overtake LO?
