Forums - Nintendo - Developers share thoughts about the Wii

I think by holding standards the third party companies who make games (and already hold themselves to these standards) won't have any issue and will be more inclined to produce games for the wii with a lower competition. Its really hard to sell a 3rd party game at $50 when there is 20 shovel-ware games to your 1 at $20.

I don't think so. I don't see people looking at Wii games, and looking at prices, but only when it comes to third parties. They look at what seems appealing to them. You make an appealing game, and people will buy it, even if a less appealing game costs less.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

As someone who works retail, I see more people choose shovel-ware over good titles than I care to count just because of price... even after I advise them against it

"Martin Hollis, CEO, Zoonami:
To make a game that truly uses the potential of the Wii Remote requires several things.

Firstly you will need imagination. You must unlearn what you have learned and put away cynical thoughts such as "it is just a gimmick" or "buttons are better". This degree of open-mindedness is not easy to find.

Our industry is focused on incremental evolution of tried-and-tested mechanics, interactions and input devices. Our industry is focused inwards on itself, and on its most loyal followers.

Secondly you will need patience. To give an example today's button-based platform game relies on over twenty years of game development across the world. Your first Wii Remote game will not compete.

Thirdly you will need humility. You need humility because you will be making games for people who are unlike yourself. Therefore you will need to place their wishes above yours."

Best. Quote. Ever.

"Pier was a chef, a gifted and respected chef who made millions selling his dishes to the residents of New York City and Boston, he even had a famous jingle playing in those cities that everyone knew by heart. He also had a restaurant in Los Angeles, but not expecting LA to have such a massive population he only used his name on that restaurant and left it to his least capable and cheapest chefs. While his New York restaurant sold kobe beef for $100 and his Boston restaurant sold lobster for $50, his LA restaurant sold cheap hotdogs for $30. Initially these hot dogs sold fairly well because residents of los angeles were starving for good food and hoped that the famous name would denote a high quality, but most were disappointed with what they ate. Seeing the success of his cheap hot dogs in LA, Pier thought "why bother giving Los Angeles quality meats when I can oversell them on cheap hotdogs forever, and since I don't care about the product anyways, why bother advertising them? So Pier continued to only sell cheap hotdogs in LA and was surprised to see that they no longer sold. Pier's conclusion? Residents of Los Angeles don't like food."

"The so-called "hardcore" gamer is a marketing brainwashed, innovation shunting, self-righteous idiot who pays videogame makers far too much money than what is delivered."

These comments are definitely interesting, thanks for posting this tres.

The thing that stuck out for me is the wiimote implementation these guys talk about. The Zoonami CEO says "your first Wii remote game will not compete" while the Creative Director of Denki says "It's a real love-hate challenge to get the most out of the Wii Remote. You have to fake it big time to really make it work and no one else seems to fake it as well Nintendo."

There seems to be a significant challenge in getting the wiimote to work well, so I really wonder how that bodes not only for WM+ but also the Sonymote and Natal.

Do they really say the price is why they do it?

Are you sure you know which is the real shovelware though? For example, would you be as critical of "Carnival Games" as "Shrek's Carnival Craze"? One of these is not actually shovelware.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

You don't always have to use the Wiimote.

There is nothing that states the device is necessary. Classic controllers can be used; have a sticker on the game that says Classic Controller required.

This is true, but The Wii remote control method is synonymous with the Wii. It's safe to say that all Wii owners have atleast one Wii remote, from which an unknown subset own Classic Controllers. Since it seems some developers are still struggling to use it as well as Nintendo, I'd argue that WM+ support from these devs wouldn't make any sense until they master use of the Wii Remote. By the sounds of it, this is no easy task.

The dude at Zoonami hit the nail on the head.

Love the hypocrisy all over the place.

"Can't stand the OS", So the PS2 OS was awesome?

"Not enough Graphical power", and your happy with the PS2?

"Too much shovel ware because of ease of development", PS2 had lots of shovel ware and it wasn't easy to develop for. Keep in mind that both the xbox and 360 were also praised for their ease of development, but no vast amounts of shovel ware.

"Retards don't buy non Nintendo games", Guitar Hero, EA Active, Carnival Games.

"Retards only buy casual", Guitar Hero & Brawl, Monster Hunter, Mega Man 9

"Wii input requires imagination", so what you don't have any?

"Wii has a low Return on Investment", that's because the game is shovelware or niche. Okami anyone? notice how well that did on PS2.

"Adult titles need to have realistic graphics." Sorry, but Blood does equal adult. http://www.gamespot.com/wii/action/sexypoker/index.html
