Forums - Sales - So...The PS2 Sections Are Vanishing from My Video Game Stores

I haven't seen PS2 games in a nongaming store since last Christmas, except in bargain bins.

"Now, a fun game should always be easy to understand - you should be able to take one look at it and know what you have to do straight away. It should be so well constructed that you can tell at a glance what your goal is and, even if you don’t succeed, you’ll blame yourself rather than the game. Moreover, the people standing around watching the game have also got to be able to enjoy it." - Shiggy

It's too early to retire the PS2 games sections yet. It's not like PSP software does a whole lot better sales wise. In November Americas figures, PSP (retail obviously) software sold only 17% more. Think that's just a black friday pattern? Nope. For 2009 figures (up to Nov 28), PSP software only sold 17% more at retail than PS2 software. That is incredibly sad for the PSP. It doesn't surprise me considering how easy piracy is for the PSP compared to the PS2. Soft modding a PS2 is very easy but it's not as convenient and the downloads are much bigger (a single-layer DVD is 4.7 GB whereas a dual-layer UMD is 1.8 GB).

Everywhere I go the PS2 sections are almost nothing now.

Wii and 360 make up the most space with the PS3 area slightly smaller than those.

PSP is almost non-existent.

alot of the stores i shop at, have very few ps2 games left and some stores dont carry them anymore.

At the Gamestop I work at, this year we took down the PS2 section and let the Ps3 section take up that wall space. But PS2 still has the most used games at the store so still a lot of bins of PS2 games. But new section of PS2 is pretty pathetic. But I'd still say our PS2 section is bigger than our PSP section.

Largest section for us right now appears to be a mix of DS and 360 with Wii and PS3 close behind it. PC section is quite small with a small GC section as well. GBA section is miniscule. We expect the GBA section to disappear soon because of the DSi but GC section will be there for awhile considering they can still be played on the Wii. Xbox section has of course been gone for almost a year now. From the way its looking, though, PS2 section may be gone before the GC section because PS3's can't play PS2 games at all. Considering we have like 6 games so far announced to come on PS2 in 2010 this should happen pretty fast.

The PS2 software market actually is significantly bigger than the PSP software market if you look at the software shipments splits released by Sony for recent fiscal years.

              FY 3/2008      FY 3/2009         FY 3/2010E

PS3           57.9                103.9                143

PS2            154                 83.5                  54

PSP            55.5                50.3                  43

In the United States, my guess is PS2 SW > PSP SW. In Europe its probably PS2 SW > PSP SW by a small margin, and for the rest of the world - due to Japan - its gotta be PSP SW > PS2 SW. So given that, I find it surprising PSP had outlasted PS2 in at least one store.

Former something....

Wow, things sure are different at the other side of the ocean.

Here in the Netherlands, it's more like:

DS 25%

PS3 18%

360 18%

PS2 16%

Wii 15%

PSP 8%
