Forums - Gaming - Square-Enix CEO Calls Out Japanese Gamers on Western Bias!!!!

The main problem with western games in Japan is that they're marketed horribly.

Look at the Crash Bandicoot games on the PS1. They sold very well in Japan (Crash 2 selling well over 1 million in Japan), yet they were developed by a western company. So what's the deal? The problem is that western developers try to take western games and push them with western-style marketing...in Japan.

While I would love to see Japanese gamers be more diversity in their game tastes, the solution for western developers is simple: Make your game have Japanese appeal.

what's the difference between japanese and western style marketing

@ClaudeLv250

I'm not making it up.  There is an actual article on 1up

and this guy is exactly what i was talking about just now.

Not just MW2 bud. Assassin's Creed 2, God of War 3, GT5 (yeah its made in Japan, but for a mostly western audience), Heavy Rain, Splinter Cell Conviction, Halo 3, Gears of War, etc.

What's japan got? Final Fantasy?

Also...

Katamari, Street Fighter, Pac Man, Mario, SNK fighting games, Virtua Fighter, and....

I will let others list them, because they are there.

That's a decent list, but I stand by western games being better overall.

Oh and I forgot Killzone 2, Mass Effect, Oblivion/Fallout, Ratchet & Clank, GRAND THEFT AUTO (yeah it deserves all caps), Bioshock, Batman AA

damn that's all off the top of my head.

Riachu, I will show you:

Japanese Crash Bandicoot Ad:

I don't think they're the same game, but the point stands.

The reason why Western games don't sell in Japan is because most western game's storylines suck hippo assholes. Japanese people care about story. If they didn't then rpgs wouldn't be so popualr there. Also, the japanese don't like the mindless violence that western games bring.

Final Fantasy, Shin Megami Tensei, Metal Gear Solid, GT5 (Its a japanese game), Mario, Pokemon, Devil May Cry, Ninja Gaiden and the greatest game of all time Xenogears.

Japanese games >>>>>>>>>>>> Western games

100% agree with this. Most of my gaming classics have been Japanese made. Very few western games have made it into those ranks. But i have to admit that them being closed off on games simply by wat country or region it was made is a little unfair. Sure i can agree with them being turned off by MW2 ( i no i was too lol) but there are still a lot of good western games out there like Mass Effect, AC, and God of war

1. WTF is Shin Megami?

2. Devil May Cry and Ninja Gaiden are mediocre

3. Okay I'll give you MGS, FF, Mario, Pokemon and even GT5 (my most looked forward to game)

But damn west has so many. I'm getting tired of listing them but there's Grand Theft Auto, Killzone, Ratchet & Clank, Crash Bandicoot, Gears of War, Halo, Modern Warfare, Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect, Oblivion, Fallout, God of War, Half Life (oh yeah!), Left 4 Dead, Bioshock, Tom Clancy Games and more.

Western Games >>>>>>> Japanese games

I'm not anti-japan by the way. My favourite series is Gran Turismo and Pokemon red/blue was probably the best game ever on a handheld device.

I just think Western games are better especially nowadays.

In the case of myself, I don't think about where a game is from.  I just happen to think whether a game is good or not (my preference) and don't have a certain fetish for this culture or that.  I neither worship, nor hate, Japanese culture and their games.  I like the games I mentioned in my prior post as multiple ones you listed (outside of GTA actually).  I do prefer more sandbox to linear however.   I guess because I am like this, I am a bit dismayed people would think otherwise, or any culture for that matter.

And yes, I am a person who does give Shogi a shot to (and will play it again, as I own it for the 360, and also have a physical set).  However, I consider Final Fantasy to not be all that, and something humanity is supposed to bow down and worship.

and this is why a lot of western games will never be classics IMO
