Why is everyone making a big deal about his 'attitude'?

I really don't understand, it never affected me the way it seems to affect some people, he says such and such sucks.

ok? i dunno wut the big commotion is.

Most of us find it grating; arrogance is difficult to stomach when it comes from a person who you don't need to listen to (and even when you do have to listen to the person). Additionally, calling your readers "idiots," "fools," etc. is not a wise way to get people to listen to you. There's more, but to summarize: people often have better things to do than listen to someone insult them or pleasure himself to his own written words.

So if you complain so much about 'listening to his attitude' why dont you like, not read what he writes.

I dont know what you mean by 'calling your readers idiots and fools' can you clarify?

I have no problems with people having an opinion; God knows I have a pretty adamant one about most things.

What I don't like is personal insults aimed at his own readers and taking a blurb from some Average Joe who happens to work in the industry and relentlessly blasting them and trying to make them look bad for no real reason past his own need for attention and complaining. I'm all for taking on a company, CEO, or PR guy. But taking some guy with no ability to retaliate to task over a one-line quote?

To that, I simply say: Grow up, you small-minded prick. It reeks of pettiness and lack of respect for his own profession.

What do you mean by 'personal insults to his readers' can you clarify? i never saw this.

But your second statement just shows me your bias, any publicly published opinion piece, no matter what, is subject to criticism and people should expect it, after all you make it public.

Nor did you address his points and simply call him attention seeking and complaining, an ad hominem if ive ever seen one.

I don't remember where he's called his readers fools or idiots

As I stated only a few posts above your own, I find his ideas original enough to get past his abrasive style. That doesn't mean I don't acknowledge the style.

As to the latter, I advise keeping an eye on his blog posts. It's not uncommon for him to refer to entire categories of gamers (and occasionally non-gamers) in perjorative terms. On occasion, he even addresses a fictional reader of his website with those same terms. And even after roughly a year and a half of reading his blog posts, I can not recall a single time when that attitude was appropriate.

If you'll indulge me until I get home, I would be willing to dig through some of his old posts and link to examples of same.

I said earlier that I've liked some of Malstrom's writings when they stuck to the topic at hand and when he laid off personal attacks. I'm not going to repeat everything I do and do not like about Malstrom in every post.

He doesn't take "publicly published opinion pieces" a lot of the time. He jacks a quote from some random dude and then proceeds to make the poor guy look like an asshole. Most of the time, his point could be make more effectively without the quote, making his placement of it unnecessary and mean-spirited.

And yes, I am biased. I DO NOT like the guy. But, once upon a time, I had no opinion of him and early on, my opinion of him was actually favorable. I don't get off on seeing people attack one another, especially when the insults descend past the point of it involving only their professional career. Believe it or not but I actually find it extremely distasteful.

^He isn't referring to the readers in those posts however, he's referring to those who are blind to what is actually going on.

Anything willingly made public, whether its a blog, an opinion piece, an interview etc, is subject to scrutiny, that is part and parcel of making something public.

You can quote me some instances of these public attacks, because i have read his articles and i never once remember reading an article that is simply an attack on someones character.

He just tried his hardest to make Jeff Gerstmann look like an ass for no real reason, twisting his words and blowing it all out of proportion. Do you really need me to scrounge up old articles to show where he's done that sort of thing in the past?

Ask yourself this question: was it really necessary to try to make Gerstmann look bad and was it necessary to get his op-ed's point across? If it wasn't necessary, why'd he do it? More importantly, why does he seem to do it so often? This is the third or fourth Malstrom article I've read where I thought the same thing and I generally avoid the guy's writing nowadays.

Which, in a didactic website such as his own, is presumably a large chunk of his readership. Would you feel it was professional for your instructor to turn to the class and say something like "you're all idiots!", even if you knew he was not referring directly to you? If so, I think it's safe to say you're in the minority: most of us would feel that that behavior was inappropriate at best.
