Forums - Nintendo - Maelstrom declares games are best when spoofing serious things.

Why do we have story in games anyway?

I mean when I want to read a book I'll do so and when I want to watch a movie I'll do that.

I think gaming would be taken more seriously as a entertainment medium if it stopped trying to emulate other mediums and focused on gameplay as a whole and not just a part of the gamers experience.

Like I said before, games were always meant to have story, it was just hard to have a story when the space for programming was severely limited.

Games are not emulating other mediums, it is its own medium. According to your logic tv shows should all be sitcoms because stories belong in books.

No, games are always meant to have gameplay.

Stories are not necessary.

Solitaire does not have story.

Oxy, you're missing the point. He's not referring to parodies as in the Mad magazine "Today we make roadkill of The Road Warrior" things, even if the video choice made it seem like that. He meant lighthearted takeoffs of those works.

Contra is like Rambo, but even more aggressive and manic.

Doom is Dante's Inferno, if it was more like the last third of Aliens.

Star Fox is all the flight battles of the Original Star Wars Trilogy, just with even more crazy enemies than the AT-ATs (which was a flight battle because of the snowspeeders).

Mario is in a variation of Wonderland, in that everything is whimsical and follows its own rules instead of the rules of reality.

Am I the one missing the point if the article writer puts together a poorly thought out analogy involving a movie an it's spoof counterpart? No. That's his issue. This entire blog post of his just doesn't make a lot of sense. Why does a game have to be a parody of something else to be at it's best? Tetris isn't a parody of anything. Also why can't a serious game be a parody of a film?

There obviously wasn't much thought going into this. Not amongst his best work.

Games always had Stories even the SNES/SEGA days...just not deep to the reasons prof has pointed out( good to see back in shape prof) but if you open the Manuels they were usually on the summarized on the 1st couple of pages

Oh, we are playing a zero sum game now?

getting tired of this argument. It doesn't even exist. It's just you defending arcade games with no story like elevator action and burger time.

Tetris?

Games dont need stories, games always need gameplay.

Stories are an option.

Most flash games don't have stories.

No, i am simply disputing your claim that 'Games were always MEANT to have story'.

No they weren't, games never need or require story, they require gameplay.

you are giving the worst examples ever... Tetris is the only game to Not serve a purpose but to play( like card games)...Mario, Sonic, Megaman,Zelda, Shinobi....I can go on and on all gamew had some type of story it just wasnt integral due to limitations so it was made available elsewhere( like manual of back of case)

What worst example? it disproves your point.

'Games always had stories'.

No they didn't, if you meant 'the game industry during the SNES/SEGA days always had story games' then you would be right.

But that is not what you wrote.
