Why do we have story in games anyway?

I mean when I want to read a book I'll do so and when I want to watch a movie I'll do that.

I think gaming would be taken more seriously as a entertainment medium if it stopped trying to emulate other mediums and focused on gameplay as a whole and not just a part of the gamers experience.

Like I said before, games were always meant to have story, it was just hard to have a story when the space for programming was severely limited.

Games are not emulating other mediums, it is its own medium. According to your logic tv shows should all be sitcoms because stories belong in books.

No, games are always meant to have gameplay.

Stories are not necessary.

Solitaire does not have story.

Oh, we are playing a zero sum game now?

getting tired of this argument. It doesn't even exist. It's just you defending arcade games with no story like elevator action and burger time.

No, i am simply disputing your claim that 'Games were always MEANT to have story'.

No they weren't, games never need or require story, they require gameplay.

Stories are an option
