I played super Mario 64 at my friends house, but I didn't own a N64

I hated SUper MArio Sunshine

maybe thats why SMG is my favorite

but I can't imagine how Super Mario 64 could be better

SMg is simply the best 3D platformer ever made with allt he types of things you cand o in it

That's the thing, though. SMG has loads of awesome features and nice controls, but doesn't use them properly (in my opinion) by not giving you enough freedom. All you do is walk from point A to point B. Now, that can be said about a lot of games, but in Mario 64, I could walk like 8 different ways from point A to point B - It was up to me. In Galaxy there's just the one way. I have no choice. That's how I feel anyway.

But yeah, Galaxy is an absolutely fantastic game and any gamer would be lucky to have it. It's just not as epic as 64, in my opinion.

hmm I see what you mean in terms of freedom. I heard the castle was like an open world in Super Mario 64, so the spaceship thingy we were on didn't do it for you as a base setting?

For me the motion controls were used perfectly & they worked really well. One thing I will agree with, freedom in terms of power suits was low, the read flying mario suit was AMAZING & great music played when you sued it, but you couldn't really use it much at all!

Also remember SMG is the easiest 3D mario....maybe you didn't like that either?

I guess to understand your love for SUper Mario 64 I may have had to play it "back in that time".....which I didn't ofcourse

Do you think your complaints will be dealt with in Super Mario Galaxy 2?

Yeah, notice how none of my complaints are related to controls or stuff like that :) Because there's just nothing to complain about.

And yes, thankfully, Super Mario Galaxy 2 looks like it's going to deal with every single one of my problems. It's like they monitored me, went "Right, so this is what Nicholas doesn't like - Let's fix it in the sequel" and then they did. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is my most hyped game right now, because it's the first game in a very, very long time which has a genuine shot at beating Super Mario 64 and overtaking the position of my best game of the forever.

Really?

So SUper Mario Galaxy 2 will be more "open". I am looking forward to gameplay with yoshi & how we sue motion controls with him.

For me Super Mario Galaxy is really amazing, hopefully Galaxy 2 can bring back the wonder & the excitement once again!

Yes, SMG is the best 3D Jump 'n run ever made, but I think Super Mario 64 was better when it was released then SMG is now.

Yeah, Super Mario Galaxy 2 will have more open areas, and bigger places to run around and do stuff in. It will also be more difficult. I can't wait. :)

Can't speak for Galaxy 2 but my experience with Mario 64 has yet to be eclipsed. In this case, I vote no.

Is there any particular area you feel that Super Mario Galaxy was lacking in, whereas Super Mario 64 excelled?

Or is it just that SUper MArio 64 had something special, a "soul" that Galaxy didn't?

No way. That would be Mario 64. Then Galaxy, then Sunshine.

I don't think it is, I still much prefer Super Mario 64. For me its a combination of a (in my opinion) poor camera and the relatively low level of variation in level design (bear in mind though, I haven't played it very long, 4-5 hours, I just got tired of it, something that never happened with N64 which I basically played through in one sitting so to speak).

Some parts of Galaxy were better then 64. But I played 64 when I was younger, it holds a special place in my heart. lol

Nintendo still doomed?
Feel free to add me on 3DS or Switch! (PM me if you do ^-^)

Mario 64 > Sunshine > Galaxy

YES.

Galaxy ismy 2nd favourite game of all time. It was an absolute joy to experience. IN FACT I JUST FINISHED IT TODAY!!! There's still SO much to do though, the game is HUGE.

BTW, here's another thread to vote whether you like 2d or 3d Mario better:
