Forums - Nintendo - Super Mario Galaxy the BEST 3D Mario Ever? Yes or No?!

I FULLY believe that SMG is the BEST 3D mario game ever!

the kind of amazement & wonder you get with the music & the way he flies into a new galaxy is unparalleled in any mario title!

The gameplay variety is unmatched, motion controls are used masterfully!

& its the first 3D mario that was so good, they HAD to make a sequel for it!!

so do you agree? if not WHY?

Super Mario 64 >>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>>> Super Mario Galaxy

No, I do not agree.

I simply think Mario 64 is better, especially if you compare them both to the times they came around. I enjoy Mario 64 more than I enjoy Galaxy when I play them today, despite the controls being tighter in Galaxy and the camera being better (and obviously, the graphics being vastly superior).

Thing is, Galaxy feels way too linear to me. There's no exploration to be had whatsoever(well, hardly anyway), and the areas you actually walk around at tend to be very small. In Mario 64, the areas are big and you can go your own way. Each level feels more like a sandbox than a line. Also, I generally don't gripe about things being too easy, but Galaxy made me do so because I think the game was just way, way too easy. People keep saying "Yeah, clearing the main quest is easy, but some of those hidden stars are really tough"... But that's not my experience. Sure, a few of them took some tries to get, but generally nothing felt very hard in Galaxy, to me.

So no. Galaxy is not the best 3D Mario ever, in my opinion. Galaxy 2 may well be, though.

I played super Mario 64 at my friends house, but I didn't own a N64

I hated SUper MArio Sunshine

maybe thats why SMG is my favorite

but I can't imagine how Super Mario 64 could be better

SMg is simply the best 3D platformer ever made with all the types of things you can do in it

That's the thing, though. SMG has loads of awesome features and nice controls, but doesn't use them properly (in my opinion) by not giving you enough freedom. All you do is walk from point A to point B. Now, that can be said about a lot of games, but in Mario 64, I could walk like 8 different ways from point A to point B - It was up to me. In Galaxy there's just the one way. I have no choice. That's how I feel anyway.

But yeah, Galaxy is an absolutely fantastic game and any gamer would be lucky to have it. It's just not as epic as 64, in my opinion.

hmm I see what you mean in terms of freedom. I heard the castle was like an open world in Super Mario 64, so the spaceship thingy we were on didn't do it for you as a base setting?

For me the motion controls were used perfectly & they worked really well. One thing I will agree with, freedom in terms of power suits was low, the read flying mario suit was AMAZING & great music played when you sued it, but you couldn't really use it much at all!

Also remember SMG is the easiest 3D mario....maybe you didn't like that either?

I guess to understand your love for SUper Mario 64 I may have had to play it "back in that time".....which I didn't ofcourse

Do you think your complaints will be dealt with in Super Mario Galaxy 2?

Yeah, notice how none of my complaints are related to controls or stuff like that :) Because there's just nothing to complain about.

And yes, thankfully, Super Mario Galaxy 2 looks like it's going to deal with every single one of my problems. It's like they monitored me, went "Right, so this is what Nicholas doesn't like - Let's fix it in the sequel" and then they did. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is my most hyped game right now, because it's the first game in a very, very long time which has a genuine shot at beating Super Mario 64 and overtaking the position of my best game of the forever.

Well I just finished both galaxy and sunshine (finished galaxy fist) And I hadnt played

sunshine before since I dint own a gc but I have to say I thought galaxy was miles above

sunshine. And I actually disliked sunshine. As far as 64 is concerned I think they are a bit tied (galaxy being a bit better for me)

I agree. I had been a huge fan of Mario since the NES, but I found that I never really enjoyed Super Mario 64. It focused too much on exploration and not enough on platforming, plus the camera was really annoying. Super Mario Galaxy on the other hand I thought was fantastic. It struck a perfect balance of platforming and exploration. The gravity gameplay is also fantastic. Throw in more interesting powerups and the best music of the franchise yet, and I consider Galaxy easily the best 3D Mario.
