Forums - Sales - NIntendo reduces Wii production

It took two years to rise the production ... and now they're going to lower levels:

Report: Nintendo Scaling Back Wii Production

According to a report from Nikkei, Nintendo has begun the process of reducing the number of Wiis being manufactured.

The report says that two Japanese companies - Mitsumi and Hosiden - are facing massive losses in revenue this year due to the "declining fortunes" of the Wii and a "drop-off in orders from Nintendo to assemble game systems".

Both companies are now staring at a drop in net profits of more than 50%.

It's funny. It took Nintendo years to ramp up Wii production. They sure cut it back quick enough.

So, What do you think?

a) New colors incoming

b) New model incoming

c) Wii HD

d) Nothing, Wii iz doomez......

d) Nothing, Wii iz doomez...... of course.

Wii was selling out when they increased production and now its not selling out anymore, they had to reduce production, simple.

New colors wouldn't spur them to reduce the production of the Wii's internal components. If anything, they'd keep production steady or increase it, as new colors generally spike sales.

I personally think it's just an issue of the Wii being down year on year despite the price cut, so they're going to lower production now until New Super Mario Bros. or something else starts to pick the Wii back up.

There's no point making any more then they need to. If they aren't selling out then they may as well cut production a bit.

Makes sense, there wouldn't seem to be much sense in having 6+ million spare systems lying around.

smart move on the part of Nintendo

creating an artifiial "shortage" has worked well for them in the past, both hardware and software wise.

Why not do it again?

Better to cut back production now that supply is greater than demand, if demand rises again they can always bring production back, but for the moment, its better just to lower.

New models or Wii HD are stupid ideas, as Wii is still outselling the competition by a sizable margin, why fix what isn't broken, just because its not as high as it once was is not cause for alarm, its still better than PS2 was, its just not as godly as it was last year.

New Colors might be nice though, wouldn't mind a Famicom colored Wii.

Yes, that's exactly what they are doing and their two business partners who are facing a 50% drop in profits aren't at all bothered by Nintendo's shenaniganising.

There was no artificial shortages, lol, they were at one point selling hundreds of thousands of more Wii's a month than the PS2 sold in its best years, they literally didn't know how high demand was, then they put out some bad games and had a drought, so demand fell, but it wasn't an issue of artificial demand
