Forums - Nintendo - What does Reggie mean by "There will be more to it"

This is what Reggie said

"The way we at Nintendo do things is, you know, when we will move to a new generation, it's because there are some fundamental things the [current] console cannot do. What that says is that simply the addition of HD capability will not be the next step for us. There will be more to it. There will be additional capability. There will be additional elements, and, given that, it is far into the future."

When he said there will be more to it, what do you think?

Actually, there is a high probability that Nintendo are going HD in their next generation but have anyone wonder what media format they could be using. Is there the possibility that they could continue DVD9 or switch to Blu Ray? Has anyone consider the fact that they could go back to catridge base? because the format that Nintendo DS is using is more like SD card but everybody knows there is SHD card(correct me if I am wrong) which has bigger capacity, more durability and may probably perform as good as Blu Ray. The president of SQUARE ENIX said digital will be the future but I dont think Nintendo is ready to jump into that direction. Guys, I want you to give me your thoughts on this. Can this be one of the additional element?

It will be disruptive

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

There will be blood...
he drank your milkshakes!

Blu Ray barely performs (it's too slow) to meet specs needed for HD. When Nintendo does HD, they are going to do it right. Probably holographic storage.

Do you mean SDHC card?

He means something you don't expect, but the people at Nintendo have come up with that they hope will have the same instant success as the Wii Remote.

You're focusing too much on technology (which is not, after all, what people want to buy - they buy content) by saying DVD vs. Blu-ray. If DVD is a limiting factor, they will use a higher capacity disc. But it will be only to increase the creative freedom for new games, not as an end in itself. They will probably use a generic version of HD-DVD if they have to, as it is easier to license. By generic I mean the console won't be able to play HD-DVDs or Blu-ray but the physical media will be the same, just like the current Wii Disc being a generic DVD.

Avinash is right. If Nintendo has the right mindset, whatever they're going to do is going to try and disrupt the market that they've just created (though if the competition simply doesn't rise to meet them, if Sony and Microsoft decide that the market really doesn't want motion controls, they may not need to)

But disruption could take any form. That's why it's disruptive. Personally i feel that they are going to try and build a lifestyle device. Something that is heavily multipurpose, but not really multimedia like the competition, but a device to steer your life by. It could continue the spirit of Wii Fit, and the forthcoming vitality sensor.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Yes, the speed of data transfer isn't consistent (inner vs. outer tracks or something if I remember correctly).  Anyways, that is why many games require rather large installs on the PS3, or at least have them as optional.
