Forums - Sony - Metal Gear Solid 2 was amazing!

So don't let anybody tell you any different.  Here are my reasons:

1.  Attention to detail:  See a poster and there was a comment about it.  See a bottle of champagne?  Shoot it.  It would spill on the floor.  See a bug?  Squish it.  See an ice cube?  If you waited long enough, it would melt right before your eyes.  There's a cable hanging from a crane 100 feet in the air.  You've never even noticed that it was there.  Go ahead.  Shoot it.  It will react to the bullets!  Somebody took the time to add this obscure element!  Even the little tranquilizers that you shot from your gun had writing on them if you zoomed in with your binoculars.

2. Diversity:  In the span of a few hours, you were sniping plastic explosives, photographing Metal Gear Rex, listening to conversations with a microphone, swimming, escorting a woman around, putting out fires with liquid coolant, looking for explosives, etc.  No other MGS game offered this much diversity.

3.  Raiden:  You can ridicule the guy all you want but a.) He had a girlfriend.  b.) He kicked ass.  The guy took on 421 Metal Gear Rex at one time.  And by playing as Raiden, you got to see just how awesome Snake really was from a bystander's point of view.  Plus, Raiden had a nice butt.

4.  It was pretty:  This game came out in 2001.  If it was released today for the Wii, it would still be amazing.  The explosions, the water effects, the character models.  Nothing anybody was showing in 2001 came close.  Kojima and co. were  years ahead of the competition.

5.  The Story:  At the time, it was pretty absurd.  The Patriots died about 100 years ago?  WTF was Hideo smoking?  After finishing MGS3, everything became clear.

6.  Easter Eggs:  There's a guy who pees off of the balcony that you're sneaking under.  There's a comment for that.  There are posters from FHM.  You can kiss them.  Snake even whacks off!  During the Sniper Section, equip the microphone and snoop around.  You'll be surprised what you find.  See a bird, shoot it. This is just scratching the surface.  Long story short, the more you look, the more you'll find.

So next time somebody tells you that MGS2 sucked, kick 'em in the balls.  That'll learn 'em.

100% It may have been my least favourite Metal Gear Solid Game. But by all means this was still a 9.5 title for me.

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

It's hard to truly appreciate how great Metal Gear Solid 2 was until you've read James Clinton Howell's essay analyzing MGS2 and realize how much the game subconciously played with your mind.

Seriously, after reading all that and having played every game in the series, it's hard to argue that MGS2 isn't by far the greatest game in the series.

The best thing to come out of this thread is this link.  The incite in that article (surprisingly user friendly, too) was very impressive.  If you haven't read it, READ IT!

I read it and I thougt it was stupid.

That guy is just over-philosophizing and pointing out the 'significance' of everything in MGS2. I can also babble on about why exactly I decided to position my couch at a specific distance and angle from my LCD, but the point is if it doesn't sit comfortably then all the philosophy is useless. MGS2 had a lot of finer points to the story but Kojima ruined it with - oh wait lets quote:

And you can say whatever you want, but someone being possessed by a hand, a guy running on water and an entire terrorist takeover turinng out to be nothing but a training mission are just some of the things that made me go "Well this is fucking stupid".

There. It was fucking stupid.

The whole series if "fucking stupid" if you get right down to it.

MGS1:  Raven can control ravens, Ocelot can control bullets, etc.

MGS3:  It rained blood.  A guy got carried off by bees.  Volgin has lightning in his hands

MGS4:  Raiden got both of his arms cut off and was able to wear a trenchcoat!

At the end of the day, the MGS series is pretty much comic book science/logic in video game form.  And personally, I know what makes a good comid AND I know what makes a good game.  Did you read the whole article?  It was a hell of a lot more than just a guy over-philosophizing.  There were some truly great parallels that I didn't pick up on until I read that.  I felt like the guy was being an elitist prick (don't you just HATE guys like that, Dr. Grass?) who thought his personal opinion was so important.  In the end, I understood what he was trying to present.  I was impressed by it.

It seems that you've matured to the point where you can't enjoy a little escapist entertainment.  I pity you.

I totally agree. MGS2 is best in the series (I haven't played MGS4 though :/).

@ d21lewis

It may all come down to execution. I wasn't a fan of MGS3 either (though it certainly blows MGS2 out of the water), but MGS4 is an all time favorite of mine. MGS4 never gave me the feeling of being ridiculous (in a bad way) to the point that MGS2 did, even though MGS4 has its own moments of 'stupidity'.

Hell, I still haven't played through MGS1, but now that it has been released on PSN, I will get to it and finally be able to give MGS4 another go. I would not be surprised in the least if I were to absolutely loathe MGS1 as well, and if that is the case, I'll just have ample reason to forget that MGS1-3 even exist and just enjoy my MGS4 for what it is.

TOTALLY AGREE

it was amazing!

I have MGS, MGS2, MGS3, and MGS4.... I only beaten MGS2, that's it. I really need to play and beat all one of these days. start tomorrow!

i really liked it, i think i love mgs hehe

It is my favourite MGS. And yeah that is because of the details. I know when I had the demo of that tank part... I was really walking around for hours throwing every enemy overboard, shooting all lights, etc.

It has so many nice details that you still can find things after your fifth playtrough.

I remember I got the game for my birthday and that Otacon called me to wish me a happy birthday.

Ever tried to press the buttons of the projectors during the speech? every tried to push a marine and see a nice domino effect?

"I felt like the guy was being an elitist prick (don't you just HATE guys like that, Dr. Grass?)"

^^I see what you're doing there.

Ok sure sure, I'm over-reacting because of deep disappointment due to the over-hyping of this game. I was really gutted.

"It seems that you've matured to the point where you can't enjoy a little escapist entertainment.  I pity you."

Not true at all. It's just that in my (and many long time MGS fans) opinion MGS2 just took it too far. The technical aspects of the game were fantastic. I even showed it off to all my friends. But it all just being a VR training mission and the Colonel not being real wasn't an amazing turn of events, it was a disappointment.

I thought MGS1 wasn't nearly as far fetched.

MGS3+4 are fantastic. Kojima's 'practical joke' was just way too much to swallow, even if MGS2 is a 9/10 imo.

My favourite games are Mario/Zelda/Metroid, so you're definitely wrong about me not being able to enjoy escapist entertainment. Samus turns into a ball which is highly unrealistic, but it actully fits into the Metroid universe.

It still is one of best games ever made.
