OMG you back! Are you going to stay around? You were one of my favorite mods and then you just disappeared :(

OT: I really have nothing to say I'm still in shock

edit- btw why did you leave?

I just burned out on gaming for awhile. Constantly bickering over pointless hardware arguments while playing repetitive games that delivered the same juvenile content wore me out. I needed a year off or so.

I know exactly how you feel. I find it hard to motivate myself to game recently unless its with a group of friends, just so much other crap to worry about.

As for your argument about violent shooter heroes I agree completely. This is something that is true for games and hollywood. They seem so reluctant to portray their world through the eyes of a man driven to his darkest depths. Hollywood has gotten better at it but I feel like every time they get to the edge they pull back, afraid their audience will become repulsed with the character. If a developer could create a truly ruthless character with relatable motivations, a man pushed into his darkest depths and then fleshed into a believable world I think they could have a groundbreaking game on their hands. But they will always be afraid of alienating the player, they don't think we can cope playing through the eyes of such a character. Which is false I think, give the player the right motivation in the story and I think they would be more than happy to play.

I agree.  They have to try to make the heroes as dark as humanly possible while still providing them with believable motivations.  Not that all games and movies should be like this but some of them could atleast try.

I'm not saying this game is perfect (I made a few comments about the things I did not like earlier), I was just really impressed by Starbreeze's ability to take a pretty typical action story and deliver it in a way that didn't feel like it was pandering to 14 year old males who just want to blow the shit out of everything. That's my point. The game made several smart design choices that make it stand out from a typical shooter experience.

The game wasnt nothing special.

The game didnt do anything brilliant. Nor did it do anything completely shit.

It was just ok. Thats it. It has a few boring moments but nothing to major. The game about the right recognition. Especially when you see the standard of the other games in the genre

If that standard includes 'roided up anti-heroes who just love to kill everything in their path for no apparent reason other than that they exist, then I agree.

The Darkness didn't do that. They gave the character a real reason to go revenge-crazy and wipe out a mob family. I actually cared about Jackie, something I can't say about Master Chief, any Tom Clancy hero, any WWII shooter character (excepting perhaps that cool Brit dude with the mustache in CoD games), and nearly every other shooter I've ever played (and trust me, I've played fucking hundreds of the things dating back to Wolfenstein).

To tell the truth, I never even cared much about Freeman. I mainly wanted to find out what the hell the dude with the briefcase was up to.

Oh come on... NSMBWii is just one game, there's no need to leave the forum over it

The Darkness is fucking epic !
Only the WWI parts were a bit....strange...

I loved that part. You enter The Darkness' mind and find... zombie Germans eternally tormenting a squad of WWI soldiers, one of which was the first to carry The Darkness. Perfectly creepy.

It was fine until you walked alone along the battlefield whilst the zombie nazis kept spawning or shooting down the planes from that armored vehicle.

The vehicle segment seemed out of place, with that I'll agree. I liked the zombie Germans, though (they weren't Nazis)... They didn't keep spawning, you had to tear their hearts out to stop them from reanimating.

There is so many under rated games in every generation. Lets just start with one example on all 5 major systems.

First Nintendo Wii
So many to choose from and not wanting to flamebait I wont mention anything about hardcore gamers etc. But my game of choice for underrated is ZACK and WIKI this is very fun and challenging puzzle game that while it got nice reviews has gotten little attention.

Playstation 3
I think the most under appreciated game on the ps3 is not valkyria chronicles but a small game known as THE LAST GUY this little 10 dollar gem does not seem to get any love and that is a shame as it is one of the most awesome experiences on PSN.

Xbox 360
There are a few decent games that might qualify as under rated but I think the one I want to choose is a multiplatform masterpiece. Your underrated 360 is Brutal Legend awesome action mixed with stratedgy a good sound track and excellent vocals made by the king of underrated Tim Schafner and you have a game that anyone with a PS3 or 360 should at least play if not own.

That brings us to the handhelds
PSP
So many to choose thanks to you damn hackers and moders. But I think it needs to be said that GTA Chinatown wars is officially under appreciated on the PSP. Sales were bad on DS and even worse on the PSP despite this game being straight up awesome. If you like GTA and have a PSP buy this game and if you only own a DS buy this game.

Nintendo DS
I am going for a Square Enix game here and while you could mention a few the one I want to focus on is a unique experience known as THE WORLD ENDS WITH YOU. Please try this game if you like RPGs now the title like Persona isnt for everyone but it is awesome and if you like RPGS and want to see more than just Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy from Square Enix then support this new IP.

I liked Dark Sector this gen I thought it was highly underrated. The game play is great. I agree with most that the story was out there but I thought it was great.

Now Playing: Crysis 2

Last Finished: BulletStorm

Online IDs: PSN: computermaximus, XBL: computermaximus

Beyond Good and Evil- great reviews, was and is still a great game with nice variety, great storytelling, memorable characters, nice art design, etc. but it sold poorly when it originally came out.

Interesting read. I've yet to play The Darkness - perhaps I should look into it. It can't hurt supporting a Swedish developer, either.

Now, let me indulge in this interesting anecdote...

"The story is solid, the characters are inspired, and while it's far from fine art, it's one of the better gaming experiences I've had recently and was completely unexpected."

I know what you mean by this, but I can't help but wonder, as an open question, what is it that you mean by "fine art" and what separates "it" from the Darkness? I know the subject of this discussion is by definition an aporia (essentially, what is art?), so I don't really expect an absolute answer, but I'm curious as to why you felt the need to point out the discrepancy in the first place.

I guess the fact that it doesn't go without saying shows how far videogames have come insofar as their artistic ambition and merit is concerned.

As for an underrated game... For me, that would be the latest Prince of Persia. Not a perfect game by any means, but it was still an ambitious and refined attempt at something more than just another action title. It's too bad it didn't live up to it's full potential (repetitive gameplay and at times shoddy writing did not help). Still, credit where it is due.

Most under-appreciated game this gen is Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland, no doubt about it.
