Forums - Sony Discussion - Would you like it if Sony started producing CELL chips for PC?

Sony can make their own OS and use it
why not?
Toshiba used it on tvs if i remember right.

IBM Made the CELL not Sony

Actually it was a joint project between toshiba, sony and IBM. And It's currently being used in the 2nd most powerful super computer in the world, the roadrunner, which uses 12,960 of a later, more powerful version of the CELL processor. along with a stack of AMD opterons...

PS3 had specs of super computer when they were first announced wasn't it?

Anyway, there is no reason to release CELL at pcs, because it wouldn't run the current softwares, and the chances of a PS emulator appearing would be much higher. Let sell in it primary function of gaming, video decoding and super computing. Maybe, if they made something like a hybrid architecture of x86 and CELL it could work, though.

Why do we need an in order, high power dissipation, low int performance chip in our computers? Cell isn't a general purpose chip, it's strongest area is number crunching, where new GPUs, Fermi and Cypress, are orders of magnitude faster.

In 2006-2007 it could have worked as an physics add on card, nowadays it wouldn't work.

And to the ones saying Sony should use with android in net tops, it dissipates ~20x the amount of power of a dual core atom, the batteries would last less than an hour, and you would have a hell to dissipate.

There isn't the software to back that architecture up for a desktop.

Its quite amazing that the reason why not was given in the 2nd reply and quoted again and people are still going on.  Do people even read threads before posting.

people do read threads and if there is no software to back it up, how come you can run linux on ps3, the software is already there it just needs extra apps, and to be tweaked more to the average user so everyone can use it intead of just people who know how to get the best out of linux.
i still think if sony teams up with the makers of linux then it would be a really good opportunity to finally make the next possible os that everyone jumps on, it's about time windows (broken windows) stopped getting all the love

the software outside the os isn't there.

Software support from games. Sure drivers could solve some issues but not all..

All linux versions that you can access as a normal ps3 owner, only covers the ppe and not the spe's.

Check out my game about moles ^

Nobody would buy a non x86 based pc

The desktop x86 architectures will be better than the Cell in pretty much every metric within a few years simply due to the lack of investment in the architecture. There is simply no point to it.

Just 2 days ago IBM announced that they are ceasing Cell CPU development. The 32 SPE model will not go ahead. Shame. :)

"...However, Turek did explain that features of the Cell would continue to be moulded into other processor designs. With the future looking like it’s taking a GPU route, a hybrid technology is the direction IBM will developing."
