Forums - Sales - Will the PS3 pass the 360 in worldwide sales for any week this year?

It might, but the 360 is just a more reasonable price.

 2008 end of year predictions:

PS3: 22M

360: 25M

wii: 40M

Yes, I believe it will surpass the 360 closer to Christmas.

If its going to pass the 360, the time is now, specially with a price cut clear across the board, or possibly christmas though i highly doubt it

still, even if ps3 outsells the 360, so what? the gap will only continue to wide, and like everyone said if ps3 does not sell well when the big guns come out, its hopeless

With regard to Call of Duty 4 having an ultra short single player campaign, I guess it may well have been due to the size limitations of DVD on the XBox 360, one of various limitations multi-platform game designers will have to take into consideration-Mike B

Proud supporter of all 3 console companys

Proud owner of 360wii and DS/psp

Game trailers-Halo 3 only dissapointed the people who wanted to be dissapointed.

Bet with Harvey Birdman that Lost Odyssey will sell more then Blue dragon did.

Maybe the PS3 would have a chance at surpassing Xbox 360 for a week or two IF the price cuts and the introduction of the 40 GB model were simultaneous in all the territories... But the schedule is:

5th of October - Europe - price cut on the 60 GB model
10th of October - Europe - 40 GB model introduced
17th of October - Japan - price cut on the 20/60 GB models
18th of October - USA - price cut on the 80 GB model
2nd of November - USA - 40 GB model introduced
11th of November - Japan - 40 GB model introduced

By spreading the sales spikes in this way, they have made it very hard for the PS3 to have a stellar week worldwide. But they have bigger problems than that, it's not like many people are aware of worldwide weekly sales anyway (outside vgchartz).

It might pass it this week... the 360 should only sell 120k in america... and japan doesnt count for them.. the ps3 might slightly outsell it..

Sqrl, I honestly just think there is a serious limit to how much Sony can boost its sales in Q1 next year. Or any console maker for that matter.

Care to elaborate a bit more? There is of course a limit to the growth, but are you saying that you believe the PS3's limit is less than what it will need to mount a comeback? If so, I am interested to know what you think the major factors will be.

To Each Man, Responsibility

I can't speak for starcraft, but I agree with him(?) and so I'll give my opinion on what's going to limit PS3:

- It's still expensive. Microsoft was having a pretty hard time selling 360s at $300-$480 this year, why is Sony going to have an easy time selling PS3s at $400-$500 next year? Yes it includes a Blu-ray player, but so far that has not saved the system.

- Overly high expectations for the game lineup. There is a great lineup of exclusives coming to PS3 next year, but that was true for quite a few years of the N64 and GameCube systems too. Quantity beats quality, sadly, and while PS3's 2008 lineup looks high quality, I'm not convinced it will have the 100+ shovelware games it needs to keep the shelves looking busy all the time.

- 360 price cuts. Microsoft is relaxing because PS3 is doing so poorly, but if PS3 started closing the gap rapidly, you can bet we'd see a serious price war. Even without that, I think MS will probably do a small price drop to coincide with the GTA IV launch.

PS3 will not outsell the 360 in WW sales during the remaining weeks of 2007.

Halo effect is still relevant and will continue to be present through the end of the year.

MS will be offering more bundles (already have the Forza/Marvel bundle in the US).

The "Arcade" model offers a nice price point option near the Wii.

Plenty of good titles coming out for the 360 between now and the end of the year - CoD4, America's Army, Assassins Creed, Kane and Lynch, Mas Effect etc. to drive even more sales over the Holidays.

Cheap HD DVD ($199 Toshiba at Circuit City with 5 HD DVD's) players could reduce sales of PS3 as a Blu Ray player ...

As for sales in "Other" regions I am a bit skeptical of the high numbers of PS3 being posted - given that VG has overestimated NA sales for the PS3 consistently for the past 2 months and there isn't the same check for "Other" regions that NPD provides for America numbers (at least not that I am aware of) sales in Other regions could be a bit inflated.

Regardless, I don't think the PS3 has that much momentum past the price cut to continue outselling the 360 by 35K a week ... as someone else pointed out even if they could maintain that sales gap it would still take a bit over a year for the PS3 to reach parity with the 360 for total units sold in "Other" regions.

At the end of the day that is the biggest change in mindset that Sony faces - they are fighting to gain parity with the 360 at this point and coming from behind is not a position they have been in for a very long time.

Based on the weekly sales figures for Europe that Nintendo gave during their financial breafing last week VGchartz and gfk + chart-track are traking the PS3 (even with the price cut) and Wii almsot exactly the same. However, the VGchartz 360 numbers were significantly above the gfk + chart-track numbers.

Did those figures include countries outside Europe? Vgchartz's numbers for 'Others' do.
