Forums - Gaming - Is having a good soundtrack as important for a game as it used to be?

Pretty straightforward question. Now that video game systems are more and more like media centers, is it really as important for a game to carry a good soundtrack with it? I know a lot of gamers that just simply put a custom soundtrack on and jack the effects up as loud as they go. I'd say the only genre it matters for anymore is RPG's and maybe Adventure games. What say you?  Sound off! (see what I did there?)

absolutely ...soundtracks are still important...playing a game with crappy music just kills the experience( LUNAR!!!!)

Yes. Absolutely.

Game music is nothing like pop music. For me, it has to have a strong melody and fit the environment or scene it plays with.

I didn't buy Pokémon HG/SS solely based on the poor remixes of the music. I had it pre-ordered and was set to buy it until I heard the soundtrack.

I'd rate the soundtrack above graphics, features, online play, replay value but below content/gameplay in terms of importance.

yea i think so , i love games with good music the most

Everyday I'm hustlin'.

Wii and DS owner.

Yes, I doubt games like shadow of the colossus or FF games would be considered as good if they had crappy soundtracks in them.

Music is very important. Even if it's just atmospheric.

Check out my game about moles ^

Absolutely soundtracks are important as ever! Having the right music as just the right time completely sells moments in a game.

I admit in something like your Gran Turismo's and Halo multiplayer that having the right music isn't the most important thing, but in general having the correct music is absolutely essential.

I think they are, music is an incredible addition and help to a game's atmosphere. I sometimes play games with good soundtracks and find myself whistling or humming the tunes for weeks after, that's usually a sign that someone did something right.
This is becoming quite rare though, I'm not sure what the composers are doing differently now as opposed to when I grew up or maybe its just me having changed?

Music is definitely one of the key features to make a game great. If done correctly it should set the gamers in the right mood according to the game story etc.

As for FPS, a bunch of rock music will just do fine. =P

A good soundtrack takes a good game and makes it great. Best examples I can think of right now are Persona 3 and 4. Taking by themselves they are wonderful games, but if you add in the phenomenal soundtracks they go over the top.

Think about Chrono Trigger, FF7, FF6 etc, without wonderful soundtracks.
