I think they are, music is an incredible addition and help to a game's atmosphere. I sometimes play games with good soundtracks and find myself whistling or humming the tunes for weeks after, that's usually a sign that someone did something right.
This is becoming quite rare though, I'm not sure what the composers are doing differently now as opposed to when I grew up or maybe its just me having changed?
