Forums - General - So who's going to be the European president?

I know it's low, calling someone a clown in a popular newspaper just because how he looks is real low as well.

I just think it's really low as well to act all nice against each other on 11th November to just rip our leaders to pieces in newspapers.
"Britain ruled by Belgians? You must be joking"
That's just harsh dude...

Meh, I've always hated people that make fun of how someone looks...

And we both know that Britain only helped Belgium for self interest(+ the fact we were a neutral country back then, so they had to) =/

And there were a lot of lies going around that made the situation of Belgium look even worse lol. "poor little Belgium" should sound familiar to some. But it would be pretty dumb to let the german people use our train lines(they were actually good back then, can't say the same now tho lol ;o)

Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, West Germany and the Netherlands were the founding members...the UK was one of the first nations to join also...

Because successful politicans have no reason to want to be in the EU government yet.

Not enough power or way to help out friends.

You do know a corruption scandal actually brought down the whole EU commission in 1999 dont you?

I dont think much has changed since then.. still overpaid unelected commsioners (ala neil and glenis - combined salaries were in excess of £600,000) raking in huge salaries and guitly of sickening cronyism.

Neil and Glenis are a good example of the overwhelming burden of too much politics... £600k in earnings and now drawing state pensions from their various political roles of around £300k!!

Oh... and now these socialist champions of the working man are moving to the House of Lords.... lovely. Creaming us left, right and centre.

So... two failed politicians are now millionaires on the back of what exactly? What have they produced, achieved or innovated in the world to justify this? Nothing they have merely failed in the UK and then move to Europe and sat on various talking shops.

Politicians should not become millionaires on the back of just their political work. If they go on to successful careers in business afterwards then fine.

It also should be noted that the UK is going to have a higher number of scandals because the UK government has more power.

Think about it this way Scifiboy.  Say you have two doctors.

One treats  300,000 patients.  He overcharges the government 1,000 of those patients.

A second doctor treats 10,000 patients.  He overcharges the government  f0r 500 of those patients.

Is not the second doctor more corrupt?  He's overcharged for less patients... however his corruption vs responsibilties is a much higher percetange.

A newspaper exactly and a article wrote by one maybe two writers.  It is certainly not the opinion of whole UK.  The Guardian wasn't that negative.

I have the feeling the Daily Express can only sell well by making articles like that...If the latvian was chosen we would have ' Communist leads Europe' if the German was chosen we would have 'President of Europe was ex-Hitler jugend(youth)? not sure how to write it.   If the Dutch one was chosen we would have 'Europe lead by a Hippie;..or  'Harry potter just finish school and lead Europe know'.

And well it was a poor little belgium then.....Belgium was portrayed as an six year old boy who wanted to stop an grown up (Germany) of attacking his brother/sister France;

They both seem like reasonable appointments to me although only time will tell for sure. I'd be all for electing these officials but the reforms needed to allow that would never get through as the press would run wild with headlines of how German, French ect voters are able to vote on a position affecting the UK (even though they currently run wild with how they feel everything is so undemocratic).

I'm glad this treaty was never put to a referendum in the UK as it would surely have been rejected by ignorant people who get all their facts on Europe from the tabloids. This treaty fixes many of the problems euro-sceptics often bang on about such as reducing the size of the European commission and making the EU as a whole far more efficient. Interestingly these points are rarely mentioned in the press as they prefer running with stories about bendy banana rules.

It also baffles me how people still consider the press to be left wing. Surely no one can really consider Murdoch's empire to be 'leftist'? Or for that matter the rest of the UK tabloids? The only media I can understand to be considered 'left-wing' is perhaps the Guardian and the Independant (maybe that's because although they're not perfect they actually report the news instead of using attention grapping headlines to push their anti-EU agenda).

Crazyhorse, I would have voted no not because I'm ignorant but because I know full well what the EU is.

I don't buy the "We need to be a superstate to compete with China, USA, India". It's horseshit.

Free trade zone? I don't mind. Socialist suprstate? No. If Europe wants to be a superstate that's fine but I want no part of it and I want England to have no part in it either. Scotland and Wales can go join for all I care, I want independence from them anyway.

Are you two seriously comparing the EU to the Soviet Union?

(Former) Lead Moderator and (Eternal) VGC Detective

I can see this debate has moved to the realms of absurd lol.

Yes, the UK is low in corruption now and the EU has higher corruption. But when the EU gain more power over us corruption will increase, for no other reason other than a large government (and having to govern large areas) will inevitably suffer from increased corruption.

If you ask me does this deter me from getting more involved with the EU, I would say no. I think that advantages would still outweigh the disadvantages.

...However, I would like the EU to be a bit more Democratic.
