I know it was a side game in Japan, and Lost Levels = SMB2 there. How isn't it a real mario game?
Demon's Souls Official Thread | Currently playing: Left 4 Dead 2, LittleBigPlanet 2, Magicka
I have already finished with 3 friends and (at least in multiplayer mode) is the funniest mario I have ever played =D. One moment you re jumping, next one running for your life, after that you are in a bubble, and finally you die in the most stupid form XD. I really love this game

Metroid: Other M
I think SMB2 USA is a real Mario game. It was released as SMB USA in Japan.
And while it was being created originally as Doki Doki Panic, Miyamoto was still on the team, and he was creating several things that have become Mario standards, like Bob ombs, Shy Guys, and Birdo.
But to me, rating it low isn't that bad. Calling something the worst Mario 2-D platformer is like calling something the worst Beatles album. It's still damn near perfect to me. It was the first game I played with really great credits that listed all the enemies and their names. I think that should come back in new games. I also really liked Wart and the dream plot.
I love that people are rating this up with Mario World and Mario Bros. 3, two of my favourite games of all time. Now just let me get my hands on it.

SMB3 - frog suit, tanuki suit, flight, World 4, World 5, World 7, airships, first world map, great ending 3. SMWorld - Yoshi, best world map ever, ghost houses, Star Road, Special World, switch palaces, colored Yoshis 4. SMB1 - your princess is in another castle, perfect game, changed the world 5. SMB2 USA - multiple characters, POW, Shy Guys, Bob Ombs, Wart, flying carpets, magic potions, and you can pick a rocketship plant out of the ground, great ending credits and music 6. Super Mario Land - you get a plane and a submarine, you go through Egypt, amazing music 7. New SMB - great game, but too easy, great mini-games, vs. mode, mega mushroom 8. SMB2 The Lost Levels - great game, but too similar to SMB1, basically a nightmare mode for SMB1, still amazing though |
Swap Land for 2 and NSMB (DS) with Lost Levels and you've pretty much got my list, and for roughly the same reason.

I still think they shouldn't have made it look so similar to the DS game in terms of artwork, title etc. but from a sales perspective, everything else would have been foolish. |
The game's graphics and artstyle are actually much better than I thought they'd be. They don't go for the "wow!" effect, but if you pay attention to the details and background (especially after the first world) you'll find the art is rich and varied, but never distracting. It's grown on me immensely.

An argument can be made that it's not only a reskinned version of another game, but the mechanics are radically different from those of other Mario games. You simply can't play them in the same manner.
That said, you can raise the same argument about Zelda II, and that IS a Zelda game.
| ameratsu said: Why does everyone rank SMB2 (US version) so low? I really enjoyed it and played it much more than SMB1. |
I only ranked it low because I used to play SMB all the time and just run from beginning to end to see who could get more points (without dieing) or finish first.
Anyways, anything above SMB2 on my list is pure awesome, while the lost levels just frustrates me.

Here's mine on fun:
1. NSMBWii
2. SMW
3. SMB2
4. SMB
5. NSMB
6. SMB3

I agree with this order and the reasoning completely. However, I'd likely switch SMB2 and SMB1 if I had basing this purely on fun factor.
