Forums - Sales - Sony: 70% sales growth YoY for PS3; receives 17 VGA nominations

What do you mean? What they were saying was correct regarding the shift towards HDTVs.

I think the PS3 specifications makes perfectly sense from the grand perspective, of course there are many young kids without a HDTV and surround audio set, but there's now a large fast increasing demand for high quality HD content.

First and foremost Sony is a consumer electronics company, it's in their interest to advance the market towards HDTVs, Blu-Ray and better audio equipment.

IMO having HDMI, super powerful Cell, Blu-Ray (for games as well as HD movies, apart from much more capacity it's far less noisy and scratch resistant), default harddrive, WiFi, Bluetooth, etc all out of the box makes sense from the big picture while taking into account a 10 year life cycle.

I could die happy if Sony neevr says the phrase "10 year life cycle" ever again. They only said it because they started so slowly out of the gate they needed to save face.

To be fair and accurate, they first stated this before the PS3 actually launched.

Of course they knew they had a high spec console thus with a high entry pricing compared to rivals.

Quotes from July 2005 (PS3 first launched at the end of 2006, these comments were made well before any of the new consoles launched):

"We're looking at a life cycle of 10 years with the PlayStation 3. We're currently shifting from standard TVs to HD TVs," said Kutaragi.

"I'm aware that with all these technologies, the PS3 can't be offered at a price that's targeted towards households. I think everyone can still buy it if they wanted to," said Kutaragi.

"So we're going to have to do our best (in containing the price)."

So I think it's a bit sad to read such comments from many people (usually from rival console fanboys).

ROFL, I can't believe they didn't see the fail in what they were saying

The PS3 is far from a failure.

Of course, if you consider a platform with seventeen games over 90 on metacritic, owner of exclusive game of the years for 2 years in a row, with a free online service that is nearly at par with xbox live, a pay service, with just as many if not more stellar games on the horizon, with an excellent 299$ price point offering more for the consumer for their dollar spent than any other console known to man is a failure then I guess it is.

the ps3 is the only console to ever gain such steam after being behind so much. even then, its already outsold the entire lifetimes of the N64 and the gamecube.

PS3 took Sony from First place to third place, they may have gained steam wit the slim, but will more than likely still end up last

In addition they lost a ton of money on the PS3, money they will likely never recoup

So it outsold N64 and GCN, both were consoles that made money, PS3 has not, and likely will not end up making Sony money.

If you don't call financial and marketshare losses a failure then I don't know what you'd define as a failure

Has all that tech helped Sony, as far as I can tell, they no longer lead in any market (TV's video games, movies, etc.), not to mention they are currently in the red.

The PS3 will be on store shelves for 7 more years. It will sell for 7 more years. They said the PS Brand was profitable.

Sony opperates differently than Nintendo. Its far to early to say whether or not it ends up as a failure for them.

I consider a console where, I chose games like wii fit plus and rabbids go home as my contenders for game of the year to be a failure.

Personally, it's just an opinion.

PS3 will sell for 10 more years?  Who will buy it?  What companies will support it?  Companies don't decide how long a product sells, consumers do, sales and profits do,  and currently the only console with any chance at longevity is the Wii.

Large scale investments were anticipated (not the weak dollar though, making matters worse than anticipated for the states).

Their CFO even stated that if they would have allowed the PS3 to sell more in the past, their losses would have been greater. Sony anticipates to generate profits on the PS3 for 2010, if the PS3 was a failure for Sony can only be judged at the end of this generation and not at the beginning. And of course one will have to take into account the big picture as well (earlier than anticipated Blu-Ray movie victory, additional HDTV sales, etc)

Investments may have been expected, but I doubt Sony was expecting to be in third place, and were likely expecting Software to make up for losses in hardware, something that has not happened.

Sony may make a profit on the PS3 next year, if they don't price cut, but will likely not recoup what they have already lost on the system.

They may have won the blu-ray war, but are sill losing to DVD's and rentals and Direct downloads are rising, threatening any future for Blu-ray

Sony lost the HDTV market, to Samsung I believe, so HDTV success there likely goes to Samsung not to Sony

The Wii will be off the shelves in less than 2 years. It has absolutely nothing left for it besides nintendo first party games. There is absolutely nothing left to look forward to for it in terms of 3rd party games.

Developers don't even want to support it anymore as it has generally been a loss for them in terms of profit. The Wii was last place for profit for a number of big publishers this year.

I'm not saying it's a failure, it's obviously not. But its audience isn't buying software that doesn't have nintendo strapped to it.

The Wii is an amazing machine, but even with an upgrade it will still not be as powerful as a ps3. The PS3 and the 360 will far outlast the wii in terms of shelf life.

Well, congrats to Sony. But Nintendo is winning this marathon by like 10 miles! lol

Why does any of that matter, the only concerns for how long it lasts is one, whether it makes Nitnendo a profit, it does, and whether it sells the most, it does, so why would its shelf life be affected by third parites, if people keep buying it more than PS3 and 360 and it make Nintendo a bunch of profit, its not going anywhere.

You don't seem to get it consumers, profits and sales are all that matter to how long a console lasts.  Wii has them, PS3 doesn't
