"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

@Darc, why play a game you don't like twice? That just seems silly. And I hope you don't play MMOs if your a questor (person obsessed with, or at least aiming at, doing every quest)

@Aragod, curious to what put you off about FFVII. It's not my favorite FF, but I thought it was well done, and had an interesting story (especially for the time).

Well I think that was the problem, I've played it after all those years downloaded from PSN, because all the talk that about how it changed RPGs at its time (which probably did).

I didn't like the setting, I thought it would be fantasy (final fantasy... you know association :), and I really can't stand FF combat system, maybe deeper in the game there are more things to it, but after 6 hours it was the same old and boring. I've played other FF games on NDS (well tried), but it's really not my cup of tea. Maybe I'm getting fed up with the japanese story telling, with all those incredibly naive characters and all the patos... The only JRPGs that have ever appealed to me were Fire Emblem (but that's mainly because of the gameplay, strategic rpg is my mana) and Dragon Quest remakes on NDS. Which is weired, since DQ and FF have a lot in common.

Yeah the story in FFVII get pretty cool later in the game, but I can see what you're saying. It's the same for me and FF1. Some of my friends are all like "it's the best FF ever! I love it, and still go back to play it" and I try to play it and it's crazy boring. It's all about nostalgia factor for a game like that, and a game like FFVII now. But back then, it was the shit.

I like strategy RPGs too, but I haven't played any recently. They just can't seem to keep my attention the same anymore. Shining Force was my favorite (all 3, though I never got all the parts to SF3). Maybe I'm just waiting for a good, new SRPG Shining Force, not these lame-ass boring action RPGs they keep trying to make.

There's an awesome thread for this:
http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=80065

It's called "How long does it take to beat this game?" and Gilgamesh is doing his best to keep it updated... Dragon Age currently averages in at 45 hours, it says.

This is invisible text!

i just started it with a mage on 360 im pretty bored :P (prob 1 hour in game atm)

I can't decide whether to get PC or PS3 version.

I had the same problem and ended up getting the PS3 version. They play very differently though... there's some bugs on the PS3 version that I don't think are in the PC version. They are very minor and since I haven't played the PC I can't say for sure if they're fixed. But the targeting system in the PS3 requires you to select a target using the d-pad. If you're in a long room it's hard to target some of the people at the far end... which is important because they're usually the mages. Also another bug is every once in a while if I try to pause the game by opening the wheel it get's stuck and becomes reversed. So when I try to pause the options open up and the action continues and when I close it the action pauses with no option wheel....

Also... in my opinion if you like to run around with a big sword and kill stuff the console version is good. I have a feeling playing caster classes is better on the PC version, especially on harder difficulties with friendly fire.

That being said I think this game is amazing!!!!! There is a lot to do in it. I already feel that I've missed a lot... and it does seem like there's a LOT of depth between classes. I haven't touched rogues or traps etc in my current playthrough. I'm saving that for my second time through.

I actually made a caster first (and have thus deleted her since I made some mistakes in spell choices) on nightmare mode and had no problems with friendly fire.

I have the Xbox version.

Oh good to know. I was considering just getting the PC version to play as a caster.

Yeah thats pretty much it, I have problems playing any old games that I haven't played before, since I can hardly have that nostalgia kick, because this is my first gen of consoles. I can play remakes on handhelds, but god damn if I ever played FF remake on WiiWares. I just expect more from the big screen, it might be sad but well... that's how it is.

I've allways enjoyed strategy games and rpgs more on the pc, rather than consoles. Turn based / real time realy doesn't matter to me, I love them all and spend years playing those. That Shining Force you've mentioned, what are they like? I might check those out.

MY HYPE LIST: 1) Gran Turismo 5; 2) Civilization V; 3) Starcraft II; 4) The Last Guardian; 5) Metal Gear Solid: Rising

I played through it in roughly 90 hours with the DLC and most sidequests completed!
All in all, a fantastic game! Glad to see Bioware back in full in this genre!

I have the PC version Aragod. Once I heard how gimped the console versions were in comparison combined with me being able to get my Blood Armor bonus on the 360 version of ME2. There was no alternative. I wish I were capable of running through an RPG without doing side quests but I just can't do it.

Every time I beat Mass Effect. I did every single side quest. Except for the once, a game glitch prevented me from finishing the quest with the Hanar preaching on the Citadel on one play through. I had to save the game before talked to the C-Sec officer. When I reloaded my quest he wasn't there, he showed up on the map but he wasn't there.

Everyone on the forum knows how much I hate Final Fantasy VII. I played through it twice. I got all of the side quests in the second play through. Part of the reason I played through it a second time was to get the side quests I missed. I think I have some sort of side quest OCD.

Amen brother.

I was in a hurry, since I'm starting my exams already (finishing some left overs... :/ ). But once I'm finished I'm going to complete it through and through, also on Bioware forums it seems like a lot of people are already starting developing some very interesting projects. One of them beeing recreating Baldur's Gate 1 + 2 in DAO engine. DAO Toolset seems like an immensly powerful developing tool, the fact that you can create ingame cinematics, model own creatures, weapons, voice act your own characters and write the story... Well with PC version of Dragon Age Origins, it seems like you won't need another game for a good few years.

BTW kudos to you for finishing Final Fantasy VII, I just gave up, that game was so offputting for me, since that day I wasn't able to settle on single FF game. Which is quiete interesting, since I really like DQ series.

I actually had to stop playing EQ2. I had three level 80's in addition to seven other characters. I just couldn't keep my characters maxed because the content was coming in way too fast for me to finish it all. As for why I played FFVII twice, I was a FF fanboy at the time wanted to give the game another chance. While I still can't stand the game, I really gained a lot of respect for Zack after seeing the missing scenes from Cloud's backstory. It made dislike Cloud even more which I didn't think was possible.

They are older games, 2 were on Genesis, 1 was on Saturn, turn based strategy. All of my favorite RPGs were with Sega actually, those 3 games, and Phantasy Star 2-4 (1 is meh). Shining Force 3 was the best though, had a friend system (the more characters assisted each other, they'd start to get bonuses when next to each other), could redo any fights (so long as you didn't finish them, and cast a spell the main character had) so my friend and I would massively level up in that game, for whatever reason it was very fun. It also had 3 scenarios, each with a different main character, and by playing all 3, you get the full story.

First is with Synbios, who's essentially rebelling against an evil empire. Second is with Median, who's part of the empire, but discovers its corruptiong and fights against it. And 3rd is Julian, (who you think dies in the 1st scenario) who ends up fighting the real evil behind the empire. I've actually only beaten the 1st scenario, and played some fo the 2nd (though the 2nd and 3rd were never released in America). Fun games though. They aren't so easy to find these days though, even if they're MUCH cheaper (scenario 2 peaked at about $100). Not sure if they'd be as fun these days though.

Haha i barly played EQ2, but damn that's a lot anyways. I'm a semi-questor myself. I'll do all the quests if I can, but that usually just applies to my Main character. And even then, some quests I'll pass on.

Hey, as long as you don't say something like "well I hated Cloud, and I loved Squall" then all the power to you. Haha I hate Squall so much, he's so annoying -.-

You surely have my respect for playing a game you didn't like, twice.
