Forums - Nintendo - Anyone have information on the next Zelda at all?

Twilight Princess was the most succesful Zelda game in Japan since Ocarina of Time. It's hardly a flop, considering how the series has never been big around there.

Quoted from Wikipedia:

"In spite of the game's success in America and Europe, however, Miyamoto has publicly expressed disappointment at Twilight Princess' modest sales in Japan. The reason, he believes:

'Well, I think a lot of people who bought the Wii are not necessarily the types of people who are interested in playing that kind of game. And a lot of the people who would want to play it [due to chronic shortages of the console] can't find a Wii! But mostly, I think it's that there are fewer and fewer people who are interested in playing a big role-playing game like Zelda.'"

It doesn't really matter what we think if Miyamoto doesn't like it. The fact that PH is likely to outsell TP 2 to 1 lifetime does nothing to change that fact.

Incidentally, that last line confirms the RPG element of Zelda.

And yes, Nintendo needs to change things up with the franchise. They know this. I think PH did a great deal to that extent for a spin off. I do find it likely that Zelda will be playable in one of the future games. You've played as other characters than Link since MM.

I'm sorry, when did modest sales translate into flop?

Tag - "No trolling on my watch!"

Nintendo worked to make it - and marketed it as - "better than OoT" but sales clearly don't reflect that. It's a flop in the sense that it failed to live up to expectations and rejuvenate the series in Japan like they had hoped it would. Obviously it did quite well overall (third best selling Zelda WW), but this explains why Miyamoto thinks people just are not as interested as they were when OoT was released. Personally, I think there are other explanations, but I don't work for Nintendo so it doesn’t matter.

I don’t get why you’re making such a big deal about this anyway. TP wasn’t exactly the best thing to ever come out of Nintendo. Then again, OoT wasn’t either.

All seriousness aside, I felt like I should post this from Game Informer Magazine Vol. 168, if you haven't already read it.

The unveiling of a new Zelda game is a momentous industry event, but Nintendo recently lost is chance at a big reveal when a secret internal document leaked. This detailed form not only reveals the whimsical title of the upcoming entry- it clearly describes every major weapon, item, and dungeon in the entire game.

WARNING
: The following paragraph contains major spoilers!

Link will start the game with a weak, wooden sword. However, after several hours, he will obtain something known as the "Master Sword", which is significantly stronger. He will also use bombs, arrows, and a hookshot to explore a land called Hyrule and its puzzle-laden dungeons. The dungeons will incorporate environmental themes: one contains a lot of fire, another is full of ice, and there's even one out in the desert!

At this point, the only other mystery that remains is who will be the final boss: Ganon or Ganondorf. You'll just have to play the game and enjoy the surprise.

Very good stuff.
