Forums - General - What is your skill? Your function in society? Your purpose in life?

Dave Spritz: I remember once imagining what my life would be like, what I'd be like. I pictured having all these qualities, strong positive qualities that people could pick up on from across the room. But as time passed, few ever became any qualities that I actually had. And all the possibilities I faced and the sorts of people I could be, all of them got reduced every year to fewer and fewer. Until finally they got reduced to one, to who I am. And that's who I am, the weather man.

I can only find a fucking Spanish dub of the clip =/ so power to you if you know Spanish

Napoleon Dynamite: Well, nobody's going to go out with *me*!
Pedro: Have you asked anybody yet?
Napoleon Dynamite: No, but who would? I don't even have any good skills.
Pedro: What do you mean?
Napoleon Dynamite: You know, like nunchuku skills, bow hunting skills, computer hacking skills... Girls only want boyfriends who have great skills.
Pedro: Aren't you pretty good at drawing, like animals and warriors and stuff?
Napoleon Dynamite: Yes... probably the best that I know of.
Pedro: Just draw a picture of the girl you want to take out... and give it to her for like a gift or something.
Napoleon Dynamite: That's a pretty good idea.

So what are you good at? What makes you different from the rest of everyone? And what do you do when you realize that you're not the best at what you do. For example, you can consider yourself to be a really "hardcore" gamer, but there'll always be someone more "hardcore" than you.

My purpose in life hmm...

I always saw myself as a maintainer and protector of order and the ones I love. The sad thing is those qualities are often overlooked and the ones that create always get the higher portion of the credit. I've lived long enough though as to be fine with that. As my company's repair technician/floor IT manager I'm just lucky that my career involves what i love.

Wow, what a downer of a thread. Been contemplating this for the past month or so and I do not have a definite answer. That Weather Man quote pretty much sums up my worst fears.

Yeah, the movie's great though IMO. You have a character that has so many dreams. Making up with his wife. Getting back his children. Becoming a great novelist like his father.

All the while the only thing he's known as is, "The Weather Man".

He realizes that he has all these dreams, but simply isn't able to fufill them (he doesn't have those qualities). So he decides to simply accept who he is, and make the most out of it.

We have to let go of some stuff, and we have to realize that we can't control everything in life.

"Robert Spritz: Do you know that the harder thing to do, and the right thing to do, are usually the same thing? "Easy" doesn't enter into grown-up life... to get anything of value, you have to sacrifice."

The Weather Man can't control the weather, and can't exactly predict it either. So we just have to make do with what we have.

um well as im 15 it probably a little early for me to say....i would like to be a good leader(as in army) but ill probably just do somehting related to writing

"They will know heghan belongs to the helghast"

"England expects that everyman will do his duty"

"we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender"

I have no purpose in life. I would love to be a scientist (physicist), but that's never going to happen.

To be honest, I would like to become a professor/lecturer at a university, that would be a good job. I think I would like that. I get to do some teaching at my university next year if things work out, I'll see how that goes.

My gal says she keeps me around because I can reach things that are up on shelves that she can't reach. So. . . there ya go.

My goal is to do fundamental physics research. I'm applying to university now with that aim.

My music is all that I have. I seem to have a really good ear, and can make up some pretty good tunes, but it all comes crashing down when I try to play in front of large crowds. =/

But yeah, music is the only thing I'm really good at.

Well, the way I see it, my skill, function in society and purpose in life do not necessarily have anything to do with each other. But then again, they can all be nicely summoned up with how I want my life to be.

I want to help create great video games, games that I am happy about making, and I want a family with a loving wife and some adorable children I can raise to not be idiots

My skill(s) is hopefully to be able to help create some great games one way or another, and be a good father/husband/family man.

My function in society, helping my family live a happy life and bring joy to gamers around the world with my work.

My purpose in life is to live. Be happy and just live to the fullest of my dreams.
