Forums - Gaming - There needs to be a western created Final Fantasy (main series)

I'd be suspicious, but it can be done. If Atlus could make a Western RPG (Demon Souls), then a Western company can make a Final Fantasy. Still, I can't think of anybody offhand who would do a decent job.

Atlus didn't develop Demon Souls, they published it. Demon Souls was developed by From Software

OT: Eh, it wouldn't hurt too much for the devs to experiment on that idea

Absolutely do not want a western developed FF, unless you want the series to be gutted and left to rot (much like SH: Homecoming, Bionic Commando reloaded and the soon to arrive with all the pomp and circumstance of a dull wet thud, Front Mission Evolved). Look if I wanted to play a halfbaked Oblivion or ME clone...well, I wouldn't because I hate those games. Point is, I like FF for it's unique Japanese flavor, yes X was maddeningly linear and some of the character designs irritate me, but I'll take angsty, spikey-haired 20-somethings over some muck-covered pagan that looks like an extra from Lotrs thanks. If anything, I would like to see a more Western styled RPG from a Japanese developer much in the vein of Demon's Souls. Japanese artists are just so completely unrivaled in aesthetic design, mechanical design and atmosphere.

Just because there's been a few games developed by lesser experienced developers doesn't mean a western-themed FF would too. The only reason you don't want one is because you don't like Mass Effect but the whole argument has been that we should keep intact the core gameplay style of FF but bring more realistic characters with a western created storyline. I mean, you have had 20+ FFs (if you include all the spinoffs) games that have the same japanese oriented themes, jokes, etc. One FF which is western directed won't kill the series, period.

Look, I'm a fan of the Final Fantasy series. I own every single game (except for spin offs) and when FFXIII was going to be for PS3 only I would've bought the game even if I didn't have a PS3. But as I keep growing with the series I've gotten to the point where I'm just tired of the same silliness of Japanese pop culture. I'm sure FF 13 is going to have a fantastic storyline with some twists to it but it will also be plagued with the typical jokes or same old stereotype characters since FF 7.

I believe that SE could get some badass developer or an in house team in their western offices capable of do a more mature FF game with some of our takes on life.

Anyway, I was just ranting cuz I saw the whole weapon system and the jokes about the "coat weapon" that one the character uses. (Yes, I know he uses his fists!). What do y'all think? I would appreciate input from European and American players that have grown with the franchise and have expanded their game tastes. Fanboyism responses will be ignored.

There already is a western style FF game. It's called Final Fantasy XII. Look how unpopular it was.

I agree. We really need some western developers to help make the series more BADASS and MATURE and THOUGHT PROVOKING. WITH "DEEP PLOTLINES."

Please, leave the western cliches out.

If Square made a rogue-like dungeon crawling or sand-box RPG Final Fantasy, that would be interesting. To each their own but I still find dungeon crawling to still be fun and sand-box elements can make a game enjoyable to play a second time (ie. Fable II). The first time around I played as a morally pure character (except for the odd pre-marital sex and threesome) and now I'm going through as a 100% corrupt strumpet who sleeps around a ton and becomes filthy rich by buying up all the properties and overcharging people on store prices and rent. I don't want her going on a killing spree just yet because I believe that's going to make it hard for me to go for some of the achievements I'm missing. But I will go on that killing spree and it would be cool if stuff like this was in a Final Fantasy game. Say you go sleep with Rinoa, tell her to piss off for being so needy/clingy, and then slice her up with your gunblade because you caught her cheating on you with Seifer. Now that's my kind of melodrama.

Also I want to see jrpgs return to their open-world roots. You had a lot of freedom of movement on the world map in the early Dragon Quests and Final Fantasy 1. Someone on GameFAQs I believe used a code hack to start with four Lvl 50 Black Belts and he beat the entire game in under an hour. That is how open FF1's world is. You aren't all that restricted in where you can go. It's just that you are unlikely to survive if you try. lol. I've heard that you could go straight to the final boss in DQ1 very quickly if you were feeling lucky. It's not like today where they forbid you to venturing off into places you aren't supposed to be in or they railroad you through a series of linear missions to open up more of the world map.

YES, FF needs slaves, marines, gray souless worlds, star trek and star wars cliches, marines shooting non americans, zombies, souless main characters, inocent npcs killing, tolkien cliches, etc. so much fun and so mature.. i want to travel an open world and captures slaves and torture them.like in fallout too.

Man, have you ever heard of a movie called Final Fantasy : Spirits Within? Se what we got when Japanese  tried so much to tell a western story? Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of Final Fantasy HIMSELF, was fired from Square because the movie was a big flop. I expect they don't EVER do what you are suggesting. Let's leave western RPGs to where they belong : Bioware.

Shooters aren't known for their storytelling besides Half Life and BioShock.  That said, western developers aren't any less capable of making a good story as the Japanese are.  Some examples would be pretty much anything Tim Schafer and Ragnar Tornquist make, the Uncharted series, BioShock, anything BioWare make, etc.

a western developed FF?? yea right it probably will be filled up with boring typical WRPG side questing, weak stories, no boss fights, no challenge, i mean are u insane?? No no i like this series the way it is
