Forums - Gaming - There needs to be a western created Final Fantasy (main series)

It is called Fallout 3, Fable 2, Elder Scroll Oblivion IV. SE tried to cahnge FFXII into western style. It is the only FF that dont have love story and focused more on political. Look what happen. It became the worst selling and most hated FF main series ever.

any questions?

With anime visuals? And a max age of 18 for every character? I'm in.

Btw, I think an eastern Call of Duty already exists.

Take Call of Duty, throw in some more RPG elements, anime visuals, add a turn-based battle system instead of real time and multiply amount of story and dialogue with 100. Some kind of overnaturalness is needed as well, it's eastern after all.

Voila, you have Valkyria Chronicles!

and demon souls <3

As much as I prefer WRPG due to the fact that they traditionally have are much more roleplaying focused and are in general less linear. I don't see the advantage of copying that forumla for a game thats so rooted in the JRPG model of role-playing games.

Pro tip. Play this game http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anachronox

Anachronox is an amazing game. Its a sad state of affairs that it wasn't a huge success. But such is life. If you ever see it for sale, nab it up.

How do you know people hate it? It sold well, it got good reviews, and has one of their best storytellers behind it. I mean, look at Fiinal Fantasy Tactics! My understanding FFXII was created by the same game that worked on Tactics and I don't hear people moaning and bitching about that game. Why is that? Cuz its considered a fantastic game! I do agree that the battle system is kinda akward due to its MMORPG roots but not all Western RPGs are like that.

uhhhh im going to have to dissagree with u there.  When i played Fallout 3 and Oblivion it felt like i was playing an MMO and it was ...just..wrong b/c its a single player game. Oh and as for FFXII yea i have to agree that it sucked pretty hard. it had a forgettable story, forgettable characters oh and lets not forget the summons they were horrible no bahamut, shiva, infrit no instead there all named after ships... need i say more???

FFXIII's battle system is as different from previous FF games as it can get. The game's main character is, first time in 15 years, a female. So I dont really see your point.

And it's not just FF that is in decline sales-wise, most estabilished jRPG franchises are, including Pokemon. Tales of franchise has been in decline sales-wise ever since Symphonia, it's not getting any new fans either. As for Persona - I dont think it makes much differense if it sells 450k copies instead of 400k, this series is completely niche and irrelevant, always has been.

Pokemon is not in decline.  If anything, it is in an upswing as people have said.  Sure, it probably won't see record sales like its first gen saw, but it will see amazing sales, well beyond any Final Fantasy title.  Other series like Tales and Persona, etc are also not in decline.  Aside from their 'side' games, they are actually gaining sales (albeit slowly).  And despite your view that these series are 'niche and irrelevant', they are relevant.  I suppose if FFXIII sells badly, we can call Final Fantasy irrelevant and you won't call us out on it?

Secondly, the battle system for FFXIII, the little we've been told, looks quite a bit like the traditional Final Fantasy battle engines of the PSX/PS2 era, just with more effects to make it 'look' like there's real time actions going on.  In all reality, it appears to be more of a combination of the battle engine of FFVII and FFX, with the skill upgrading system of FFXII to boot.  All just redone to make it appear like the characters are moving around the battlefield and attacking creatures in real time.  But more than any Final Fantasy title before, they seem to be trying to reuse ideas from the past, and it makes sense.  They want to appeal to their fanbase.  Its a smart move, as their going to be selling the game on the HD systems and need more than simple graphics and storyline to sell the game this time.

Pokemon has declined in popularity greatly compared to what it was back in 98. Same with Tales of series, Symphonia > Abyss > Vesperia > upcoming Graces, clearly a pattern that suggests anything but the increasing popularity.

As for the battle systems in FF games, FFIV-FFIX all had very similar battle systems. FFVII, VIII, X, X-2 all had similar characters. This has never been a problem.  And now that FFXIII uses the same battle system as previous FFs (according to you) and features similar character designs it is suddenly a huge problem? I dont get it.

There's no way to measure a games 'popularity' aside from sales.  And games like Tales and Pokemon are in an upswing in sales this gen  So in other words, you define a series in 'decline' as a series whose last game wasn't the highest selling game in the series.  Right....  Then let's just say Zelda is in decline.  Or GTA.  Or most series this gen by your definition.

Secondly, I said that they're just going back to reuse a lot of the same ideas for battle engine and gameplay from the past PSX/PS2 FF games.  Personally, I don't have a problem with this, but many fans have come to expect each FF game to have a completely new battle engine, characters and gameplay each game.  If its similar to past games, they may feel turned off by it.  Or it may be just what the series needs to draw in the FF fans.  We'll have to see.

Six upcoming games you should look into:

I want a 2D mainline Final Fantasy on current hardware.

It would be interresting, and probably incredibly awesome^^

A secondary group in SE is actually creating a DS title called 'Final Fantasy Gaiden' which is actually looking pretty good.  Looks a lot like the early Final Fantasy games, but brought into the modern day.  I'm actually more interested in this game then I have been in any FF game in years, and more interested in it than something like FFIV DS or FFXIII.  It just seems to have that extra bit of 'old school' charm while still focusing on the gameplay.

It looks just like the old Super Nintendo RPGs. Looks interresting, I like that visual style in RPGs.

Newer FF games turn me off a little due to the overworld (The camera is in the enviroments it instead of not having a camera like the 2D games)

Sure it increases immersion, but makes it harder to navigate and makes it feel less like a game. Also, newer JRPGs are so incredibly flashy. All that flashiness in the new JRPGs are just too much.

That's why it would be interresting to see SE go back to say, the FFVI style of 2D just with very high resolution sprites and backgrounds, that are like Muramasa quality or better. To see how FF would have been if it stayed 2D. And considering how cool Muramasa looks, I guess a 2D FF would look incredible as well.

I LOVE ICELAND!
