Forums - Sales - Reggie: Modern Warfare 2 may have trouble maintaining sales while NSMB Wii will sell consistently

He's actually wrecking his own bet. It's not like he bet a year, just untill January. The first 3 months after a game like MW2 releases it still sells pretty well. Wii games have a slow burn in sales.

It'll keep selling well for a while. I would bet on 10 million LTD on the 360 and around 7 million on the PS3.

Reggie is just worried that NSMBW won't do as well as MW2.

I hope nintendo is learning it's lesson

Can't wait till NSMBWii WW > PS360 MW 2 WW.

I agree with ioi, he said what I've been trying to tell everyone - it's wrong to extrapolate lifetime sales with its first week (as if legs will be better on a sequel).

The best (or most recent) example I can think of is Gears of War and its sequel. While the sequel opened far higher than the original, the game started seeing slower monthly sales as early as January, and has since been selling below its predecessor.

comparison

@theprof: 7mil by March NPD? That's way too high, see its predecessors. It'll be around 5mil, closing in on 6 at best. I don't how quickly Mario will initially sell, so I'd imagine it will catch up sometime between May and October. If we're talking worldwide, it won't take nearly as long (Japan will be a big boost).

Weird that he's picking a beef with a game that poses no threat to either side, i mean people who enjoy shooters will pick up cod, wii owners will purchase mario, no need for him to be starting a war over nothing.

He's not picking a beef.  The guy who interviewed him on TV the other day kept asking him about COD4, and he kept saying "Yeah, that's a great title, it's going to be huge, I'm going to enjoy it myself."  Reggie is actually a Call of Duty fan.  And the guy kept saying "Oh yeah, well is it gonna do better than Mario, huh, huh, HUH???"  And then finally Reggie went "Well MW2 is on multiple platforms... but Mario will outsell it on either platform alone."  Which is obvious, and a safe bet.  And the guy was like "REALLY REALLY ZOMG NO WAY!" so Reggie said "Yeah, but it'll probably take until the end of January."  He was being really nice about it, and the whole internet is going crazy and focusing on one thing he said.  He's definitely not going out of his way to start a war.  But the guy interviewing him really went out of his way to get Reggie to make a bet against MW2.  That quote is why most peopled watched the show online later.

Still, if Reggie's wrong... it'll only take Mario until February or March at the absolute latest.  And then Mario will sell for years and years and years, while Call of Duty gets a sequel.  These are going to be 2 of the biggest games of the generation either way.

Really? What kind of sales do you guys expect out of this game?

By March, that would leave 15 some odd weeks to sell more than 7m. Do you guys really figure more than 200k a week?

Iwata is saying 10 million by end of March Shipped so 7 million is lowballing it for Iwata

I expect MW2 to have stronger legs then the original.

The reason COD4 had legs is because it was the definitive online game for both PS3 and 360, when someone bought a new console, added their friends on live/psn it was only a matter of weeks until they saw everyone playing COD4, and bought it so they could play with their mates.

2 years of this built up the Call of Duty market to what we saw MW2 is now, 7 million first day etc. However why would legs fall? There are now more people with friends playing this game, and because PS3 and 360 sales are stronger then 2 years ago, there should be more people who will buy the consoles, see people playing MW2 and in turn buy it.

NSMB should outsell the 360 version of MW2 in the end, but it won't outdo the PS360 combined sales.

ROFL, did you even read ioi's post?  MW2 having better legs than MW1, lol.

Yes, the lesson that NSMb will crush MW2's combined sales and that they should make more 2D games, a good lesson indeed prof
