Forums - Sales - Reggie: Modern Warfare 2 may have trouble maintaining sales while NSMB Wii will sell consistently

COD4 had long legs but maybe everyone who bought COD4 already picked up MW2 so who knows.

Less than a week after making a prediction he's already trying to back out of it......

I don't see any backing out, just him saying what we all know to be true, even the blindest HD fan knows that Mario will have far greater legs than MW2

Yes, just like Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario 64, oh wait...

????is this some kind of joke??? Not sure if I understand your remark???The games you mentioned all sold well...even Sunshine which was on a failed platform...

Weird that he's picking a beef with a game that poses no threat to either side, i mean people who enjoy shooters will pick up cod, wii owners will purchase mario, no need for him to be starting a war over nothing.

He's not picking a beef.  The guy who interviewed him on TV the other day kept asking him about COD4, and he kept saying "Yeah, that's a great title, it's going to be huge, I'm going to enjoy it myself."  Reggie is actually a Call of Duty fan.  And the guy kept saying "Oh yeah, well is it gonna do better than Mario, huh, huh, HUH???"  And then finally Reggie went "Well MW2 is on multiple platforms... but Mario will outsell it on either platform alone."  Which is obvious, and a safe bet.  And the guy was like "REALLY REALLY ZOMG NO WAY!" so Reggie said "Yeah, but it'll probably take until the end of January."  He was being really nice about it, and the whole internet is going crazy and focusing on one thing he said.  He's definitely not going out of his way to start a war.  But the guy interviewing him really went out of his way to get Reggie to make a bet against MW2.  That quote is why most peopled watched the show online later.

Still, if Reggie's wrong... it'll only take Mario until February or March at the absolute latest.  And then Mario will sell for years and years and years, while Call of Duty gets a sequel.  These are going to be 2 of the biggest games of the generation either way.

I didn't watch the interview, but I can definitely believe you.  This happens with 90% of gaming news on the internet nowadays.

You can't tell the difference between 2d and 3d?

Look back on the site for similar situations. As you know I deal with trends and when you have a huge breakout hit like Modern Warfare 1 then is starts slow but build sales due to word of mouth. Then the second game comes out, has an enormous opening (off the back of the original game being so good) then drops quickly. Since there is already a fair amount of backlash for MW2 and many saying it isn't as good as the original, I suspect it will drop pretty fast. Similarly, I'd expect MW3 to not be as big as MW2 was.

Look at what happened with Halo and Halo 2, GTA III and Vice City / San Andreas, the original Smash Bros in Japan and Melee, Resident Evil 1 and 2 in Japan, Tekken 1 and 2, Inazuma Eleven 1 and 2 etc etc.

In all cases you have a game that is either a new series or such a departure from previous games that it is virually a new game, but it will always start slow since it is unknown and build huge sales over many months. The sequel is always different since the fans rush out day one to buy the game and it doesn't show anywhere near the same legs. This is exactly what I expect with MW2 - it won't have the long-term sales of MW1. In fact, I'd predict that monthly sales by about March will be less that MW1 was at the same time from launch.

FF7 & FF8 is the best example

GTA:SA actually disproves that theory (dunno why you included it)

Reggie just can't let anybody else have their moment, can he? He just HAS to tear them down.

-Me: I found a good deal on apples. 50% off!

Reggie: Well oranges were buy one, get one free!!

-Me: I've got 8,000 posts on VGChartz!

Reggie: That's fine. I own Nintendo Fan Girl. She has over 10,000 posts.

-Me: I won best female video at the MTV Video Music Awards

Reggie: I'm really happy for you, but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time!

Screw you, Reggie. MW2 is selling well. Everything isn't a competition.

FF7 and 8 aren't good examples? FF7 already had 6 huge FF games before it - hence the 2m+ opening. I compared GTA III to VC or GTA III to SA - both are good examples since GTA III had far greater legs than either of those games.

In regards to the west I mean, sorry (as FF8 sold more than FF7 in japan)

FF7 had much better legs in the west than FF8

About the other one

I said that in regards to this trend:

1. HUGE "new game"

2. HUG-er sequel for that game

3. Not so HUGE third game

GTA:SA was the peak for the franchise & it was the third game

couldn't MW3 be like a GTA:SA and once again be bigger than MW2 & MW1?

Just like Halo 3 was too

Really? What kind of sales do you guys expect out of this game?

By March, that would leave 15 some odd weeks to sell more than 7m. Do you guys really figure more than 200k a week?

I expect MW2 to have stronger legs then the original.

The reason COD4 had legs is because it was the definitive online game for both PS3 and 360, when someone bought a new console, added their friends on live/psn it was only a matter of weeks until they saw everyone playing COD4, and bought it so they could play with their mates.

2 years of this built up the Call of Duty market to what we saw MW2 is now, 7 million first day etc. However why would legs fall? There are now more people with friends playing this game, and because PS3 and 360 sales are stronger then 2 years ago, there should be more people who will buy the consoles, see people playing MW2 and in turn buy it.

NSMB should outsell the 360 version of MW2 in the end, but it won't outdo the PS360 combined sales.
