Forums - Gaming - Blog post ''Square Enix Have Destroyed Final Fantasy Tradition''

So I have been thinking:

japanophiles are now forced to buy both japanese and english FFXIII versions: english one to play and the japanese one to listen to the shitty song!

What a brilliant move by SE.

Nobuo Uematsu has ALWAYS been the heart and soul of Final Fantasy.

He could dump more soul into a SNES soundchip than anybody.

Just throwing it out there, but, um... Yasunori Mitsuda?

Or Koichi Sugiyama.  Or Yoko Shimomura.  Or Koji Kondo.  Or Kenji Yamamoto.  Or Jun Ishikawa.

Seriously, Uematsu is the John Williams of gaming music.  He's good and FAR more famous than most, but not the best.  I would definitely put Koichi Sugiyama above him and, if Yasunori Mitsuda had a larger body of work, him too.

This. Though to be fair Uematsu has one thing going for him - I can't think of any composer who's consistently (or, perhaps, absolutely) better than him att writing battle music. To that end, Dancing Mad is still one of the greatest compositions I have ever heard. However, with the possible exception of FFVI, the rest of his "greats" are few and far between.

As for FFXIII's score... Uematsu hasn't been on-board for a while, so I don't see the big deal. The English song still sucks, though. Mediocre pop is bad.

This is horrible I don't want to listen to that!

Petition anyone?

lol, I like Leona Lewis, I hope it's one of her good songs. IMO, both of her big hits from her first album were more memorable than the vocal songs from the previous FF games....

Why is this such a big deal though. The song will be in the game 1 time, 2.5 minutes of a 100 hour game. That can't ruin or save anything, and this is just complaining for the sake of complaining. If you want to hear the japanese song, Youtube it ffs.

FF has always been one of those ultra popular games where fans think they know better than the actual developers. Like MW2. Truth is they don't. FF reinvents itself every game, tradition isn't a good thing in videogames, and FF is pretty much the only JRPG series that bucks tradition with each new entry. It is NEVER just an upgraded version of a previous game, that is why people are so passionate about which game is their favorite, because they are all so different. Tradition has nothing to do with its greatness. If you think it does, you seriously misunderstand the theme of the series. Fans, it seems would love to see FFVII and VIII remade over and over again with new characters, but then the series wouldn't evolve, and it wouldn't be as good or as famous as it is.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

I agree to an extent. Yeah Im gonna miss that loveable huggable Uematsu but at the same time its just the theme he was doing. So to me its fine. Im getting XIV so I will get to hear that silly goose Uematsu.

lol...plus it's 2 minutes of a 100 hour game and readily available for free on youtube, or in HD audio download.....

....if that's the truth, then a lot of complaining in this thread is focused on a very, very small and downloadable portion of the game....

FF isn't about tradition, it reinvents itself with every rendition. Fans never get the same game, that's why people have favorites. This game isn't Madden or Wild Arms. It is not an upgraded version of a previous FF game. It will be completely different than what anyone expects, like every entry has been, and some people will love it, while some will pick another entry as their favorite. That's why it's such a great game. Sans-tradition and all.

@ZenfoldorVGI

1. It's NOT 100 hours, it's only 50 hours!
2. Leona Lewis' music is not memorable. It's generic, forgettable r&b/pop garbage.
