Nobuo Uematsu has ALWAYS been the heart and soul of Final Fantasy.

He could dump more soul into a SNES soundchip than anybody.

Just throwing it out there, but, um... Yasunori Mitsuda?

Or Koichi Sugiyama.  Or Yoko Shimomura.  Or Koji Kondo.  Or Kenji Yamamoto.  Or Jun Ishikawa.

Seriously, Uematsu is the John Williams of gaming music.  He's good and FAR more famous than most, but not the best.  I would definitely put Koichi Sugiyama above him and, if Yasunori Mitsuda had a larger body of work, him too.

This. Though to be fair Uematsu has one thing going for him - I can't think of any composer who's consistently (or, perhaps, absolutely) better than him att writing battle music. To that end, Dancing Mad is still one of the greatest compositions I have ever heard. However, with the possible exception of FFVI, the rest of his "greats" are few and far between.

As for FFXIII's score... Uematsu hasn't been on-board for a while, so I don't see the big deal. The English song still sucks, though. Mediocre pop is bad.
