Now this is just my opinion but it does make sense. These are my reason why GTA isn't leaving the USA.
London
- it is an awful city
That's opinion, honestly there is a crap load of places you could go such as Soho.
I am aware of this, but focused on London as thats where some people think it will be, nobody has suggested GTA Soho yet
- so many changes would have to be made to make it suitable for GTA it wouldnt even be london anymore
You know they never do a direct copy of a city? New York becomea Liberty, Miami becomes Vice, Los Angeles becomes Los Santos etc etc. They just use famous landmarks and put their own twists.
I know, but Vice City, Los Santos etc all had something relevant to the real world to link them. Barring 2 landmarks London in GTA would be so different the vast majority would never know its in london thereby making it pointless to set it there.
- the media/goverment would kick up a huge backlash if it was set in the capital, this can be avoided with a fictional city
Read above....all the cities are "Fictional" but are based off something.
Yes I know but thats not the point. Its irrelevant wether its based on a real city. My point is it wont be set in a real city. There's a difference.
- a lot of americans/europeans dislike english accents (such as cockney accents)
Now if im not mistaken, there are plenty of snuff films with these accents that no one minds at all really...ever hear of the game Modern Warfare where a good 80 percent of the game is through a British accent?
It depends on the specific accents and how thick/noticeable they are.
- the Getaway series is set in london (and apparently has a new iteration coming out)
And the first GTA has an expansion set in London, and unless there has been a new announcment recently I'm not aware of, the getaway has been canceled. Even if so the similiarites and differences between the games are drastic.
I know but would Rockstar want to share a location with another game people may draw similarites between. Also it was the first 2 expansions, not just the first one, that were set in London. If Getaway has been cancelled then this is all pointless anyway now, I don't like Getaway series so I didn't bother looking that up. My mistake.
Europe/Tokyo
- Rockstar North (who develop the main titles), no offence intended, probaly have a limited understanding regarding european/japanese culture (and american culture is a huge part of GTA and its appeal) when compared to their understanding of american culture.
Surely you must have played GTA III with the Triads and Yakuza, what about San Anrdreas with the Yakuza as well. What about ChinaTown wars? While none of them are set in a Asian company perse I would have to say that they have at they very least some understanding. They poke fun at it like they always do with every stereotype while still retaining a basic structure of it and getting the meat and bones of whatever culture they do manage to have.
- the satrizing and lampooning of american culture, and indeed american culture itself provides the basis for modern GTA and is intergral to the humour and feel of the games. As ridiuclous as GTA is, there is still some realness to it. Can you imagine CJ in Paris, or AmmuNation's in Tokyo or Vercetti in London.
Who says we're playing as CJ or Tommy? You can't have a cool asian character or perhaps some guy like say Woozie (yeah he's blind but he's cool so just an example) or a brand new character like they always do. And actually yes i can imagine Ammunation in a Japanese setting. Imagine a commercial for it on the radio with the girl with a high pitched voice or guy with that woody saying "Ammmmuuuuuuunation!" with a huge thick accent on a radio.
You can have cool asian characters, Woozie was great in San Andreas. That however was not my point. My point was alot of the humour and whatnot works because its using/satirizing whatever, american culture. You may lose that if its set outside the USA. That's all I was saying.
- the american audience are responsible for a large part of the sales, moving it outside the USA would risk alienating them and wrecking the sales and revenue of the game as well as damaging its reputation and jeopodysing the future of the series
Because putting them in the shoes of a foreigner trying to adapt to the lifestyle didn't? I'm honestly starting to wonder if you're just xenophobic.
Putting them into the shoes of a foreigner isn't a problem as long as the game is set in USA. Your confusing the setting and the main character. Set it outside the USA would risk alienating american audiences. It might not, I never said it did. I just said it's a risk. I didn't say it was a certainty. You've twisted my words.
- again, setting it in real world location is just asking for trouble, espcially now Germany has that violent game ban.
Again...all GTA settings are a real world location with a name change and slight layout difference.
There's quite a bit more difference than that chum. Yes there are some similarities but by an large the locations have been unique with individual characteristics.
San Andreas
- it was such a large and immensly filled world that last gen consoles struggled to cope. I'm guessing this gen's would (presuming san andreas is given a gta4 makeover) and Rockstar would want another game under thier belt first to see how far they can push and further refine the game engine etc
.....Your complaining it was too large? *facepalms* I think your the only person who didn't like that vastness of San Andreas. So much to explore and due and plans actually had a use. Don't you think GTA IV and 2 episodic packs gave them enough time with the engine.
Once again you've misunderstood me and ened up twisting my words. I loved San Andreas, I loved the vastness and feeling of space. I have played over 11,000hrs on San Andreas. Maybe they've had enough time but we don't know. They may need more. I was also using 'etc' to imply that other things may want extra work. San Andreas took alot of (much appreciated) hard work and 2 prior iterations to arrive. It might be the same again. I never said it was. Just that it's a likely possibility.
- I highly doubt San Andreas, of the GTAIV era would fit onto one DVD disc. I don't see Sony paying for exclusivity so it makes sense to wait until the ps3 has a big enough user base it can be launched on their only. Perhaps waiting even till the 360's successor is out in case that uses Blu-Ray, or HD-DVD or whatever. All this is still at least 2 years away and I doubt rockstar will wait that long for another GTA. Take-two won't as if rockstar move away from them at end of contract (which is in 2011) they'll want some GTA monies to cling onto.
This to me seems your only valid point so far, but I'm sure jsut because there is an option more then one disk, doesn't mean they won't do it. Look at the DLC you needed hard drives for that and I'm sure they made a pretty penny not just from the microsoft deal. Proving people do have some hard drives with some space at least.
Wether they made money from the DLC or not is irrelevant. Not everyone has a hardrive nor the space. If they struggled to fit all of GTAIV onto 1 DVD9 then how in hell would they fit San Andreas which is incredibly bigger than Liberty City.
Summary
So there are my reasons why GTA will not be In San Andreas, London, Tokyo or Europe. I used common sense in my reasoning and tried to explain as best I could. You reactions please....
No offense but my reactions is just your just a little xenophobic
